He was born September 24, 1940, to the late Alvis Pat Keene and Dixie Morris Keene. He experienced the most important day of his life when he born again on April 28, 1968- the day he gave his heart to Jesus Christ.

Lester Neal Stidham

Lester Neal Stidham

Lester Neal Stidham

Pound, Virginia

Lester Neal Stidham, 63, of Pound, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly on June 24, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, grit, and unshakable devotion to family and hard work.

Born on December 17, 1961, in Wise County, Neal was raised in Pound and remained rooted in the Appalachian mountains he loved. He attended Dewey School and Pound Elementary and graduated from Pound High School in 1980. He went on to study masonry at Wise Vocational-Technical School, but his real education came from life—building businesses, fixing machines, solving problems, and making the most of every opportunity.

A true entrepreneur, Neal was a co-owner and operator of S&H Trucking for over 40 years. He also partnered in New River Carbons and co-owned Rambler Reprocessing. He built his life with his own two hands and a mind sharp enough to rival any MBA. From coal to trucking, salvage to heavy equipment, Neal knew every inch of his industries—and everyone who ever worked with him knew him as one of the smartest, most determined businessmen they’d ever meet.

Neal wasn’t just a provider—he was a protector, a steady hand, and the most deliberate, sincere soul many ever had the privilege of knowing. When he loved, he loved deeply, and if you were lucky enough to be in that circle, you knew what it meant to be taken care of—without question, without hesitation.

He was a man of great faith, grounded in his belief in Jesus Christ and devoted to living with purpose and principle. In his later years, he found his soulmate, Pam Cantrell of Pound, and though their time together was cut short, it was rich with laughter, love, and loyalty. He embraced Pam’s family as his own, cherishing her children and grandchildren, who brought him so much joy and who he loved without condition.

Neal found peace and freedom on the open road. He loved nothing more than firing up his Harley, riding with the wind, and taking trips to the lake or exploring somewhere new. Those weekends at the water—full of boat rides, grilled food, and heartfelt conversation—were some of his most cherished memories.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Troy “Windy” and Laura Stidham, and his grandparents Oliver & Bessie Stidham and Walton & Lina Boggs.

He is survived by:

   •    His son: Jeron Stidham and wife, of Big Stone Gap, VA

Once Denzel met the love of his life, Myrtle Loise Bloomer, there was no stopping their love.   David was born on August 1, 1943 and recently accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and continued his journey home. He was so happy to be free from the bonds of evil, knowing the Lord had forgiven him for his sins. David was a proud veteran of the United States Army having attained the rank of Sergeant during his 3 years of duty. He also served two four year terms years

as the supervisor of public works for Wise County. In addition he worked for several years as a loader operator for a variety of coal companies, finishing his career with Ison Coal. David and his wife Jeanette worked tirelessly together to build a life together and raise their daughter Melanie

anything and everything, sometimes for 10 minutes and sometimes for hours. He would always ask about the boys and Melanie would share some of the fixes Nolan and Finley had gotten into and they’d laugh till they cried.. He would always end the calls with “you and Tommy be careful and I love you Melanie Dawn” and after she told him “ I love you old man” he would laugh and hang up. His daily routine was after calling he would get dressed up and head out to the Post Office and the IGA – whether he needed anything or not- and see who he could jaw with. Melanie told him that the Pound couldn’t open for business until he did his rounds. David was so proud of Josh and Sarah and would tell anyone who would listen just how much and why. The babies he and Jeanette delighted in grew up and are

responsible, hardworking, respectful and honest adults who worked for everything they have. They loved their Nana and Poppy and were loved and cherished in return. David would call or drop by to check on Rocky and Anita and sometime see what Rocky and Carlyle were working on. He loved and cherished Rocky and Anita. He would tell Melanie Dawn that his family was all he had and that we were enough. Herbert Jackson “Jack” Bentley

Herbert Jackson “Jack” Bentley

Herbert Jackson “Jack” Bentley

Herbert Jackson “Jack” Bentley was born on March 24, 1934 in Pound, Virginia and passed away February 21, 2025 at his home in Pound. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred “Millie” Bentley; parents, Benjamin and Martha (Cantrell) Bentley; brothers, Clifford Bentley, Harold Bentley, Doug Bentley, and Lloyd Bentley; and sisters, Beulah Honto, Jeanette Cvetnich, Reabul Bentley, and Margie Schoenwald. Jack is survived by his son, Jeremy Bentley of Pound.
While he went by “Jack”, most people around Pound and the neighboring towns knew him as the “Candyman.” Wherever he went–out to eat with Millie and Jeremy, taking Millie shopping, to doctors’ appointments and the cancer center–Candyman carried with him a giant bucket filled with assorted candies and treats that he handed out with a smile of encouragement to anyone who was lucky enough to cross his path. His reputation preceded him and people were always excited to see the Candyman coming. He brightened the days of countless people with his friendliness, generosity, positivity…and piece of chocolate or bubble gum!
After high school, Jack joined the service and was a SSgt in the United States Air Force for four years. Stationed out of March Air Force Base in Riverside, California, he was a Crew Chief for the 22nd Air Refueling Squadron. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. In addition to serving his country during his time in the Air Force, he also served his country and his community in his later years as a member of the Pound VFW where he took pride in honoring other veterans and their families.
After the service, Jack attended college at Clinch Valley College and, ever on a quest for knowledge, attended graduate school where he received his Master’s of Arts degree in English Literature. He brought his love of learning home with him and began teaching at Pound High School where he spent his career, serving as a teacher, baseball coach, and bus driver.
Jack made an impression on countless students’ lives. Perhaps none so much as the players he coached in baseball. Jack loved being a coach and working with the players and was very proud of them. He coached the Pound Wildcats from 1967-1989. His players are quick to praise Jack for always being there for the team, even taking money from his own pocket to purchase the team’s first uniforms, driving the team bus, and coordinating the maintenance of the field. Jack loved Pound Baseball. He coached the 1970 and 1971 Lonesome Pine District Champions, and the 1971 Region D runners-up.
When Jack wasn’t teaching or coaching, he was probably bowling! Jack and Millie were avid bowlers for years and enjoyed all the people they met during their time on bowling leagues. But Jack wasn’t just any bowler–in 1994 he bowled a perfect 300 game, an unbelievably difficult feat that requires great skill and determination. They even gave him a bowling pin from the game to keep as a trophy, and he displayed it at his house for all to see.  Jack was very proud of this accomplishment and so were all his bowling friends!
His friends and family were very important to Jack, and you could find many of them over the years taking a dip in his swimming pool that he gladly let all his family, particularly his young nieces and nephews, come and play in every summer. Many fun times were had at Jack, Millie, and Jeremy’s pool.
When you were there, you might get to take a peak at another of Jack’s prized possessions–his 1934 Chevrolet Coupe. The car has been in the family for 68 years and Jack considered it more than just a car, he considered it a member of the family. Amazingly, the date on the engine is March 30, 1934…six days after Jack was born. He fully restored the car, with the help of family and friends, after the 1977 flood and cherished it as a piece of history.
Jack loved his family very much, most of all he loved Millie and Jeremy. You very infrequently saw one without the others. They loved going out to restaurants and drove all over the place trying new ones. Wherever they went, they became quick friends with everyone who worked there and the service staff would always enjoy seeing Millie, Jeremy, and the Candyman come in for lunch.
The family would like to thank Jack’s special caregivers and friends: Vicky Stanley, Edith King, Drema Stanley, Ballad Hospice, as well as Karen and Jimmy Taylor, Brenda Brock, and Kevin and Melissa Hamilton, Frances Williams, and Les Stallard.
Visitation will be held Monday, February 24, 2025 from 5:00-7:00pm with the funeral to follow at 7:00pm at Baker Funeral Home in Pound with Pastor Alan Sanders officiating.

Graveside Services will be Tuesday, February 25 at 11:00am at Bentley Cemetery. Pallbearers are Jeron Stidham, Brad Cvetnich, Nick Pilkenton, and Steve Countiss. Honorary pallbearers include Les Stallard and Jimmy Taylor. Pound VFW Post 9600 will perform military honors. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Pound Rescue Squad or Calvary Baptist Church.

The at staff Baker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and extends our sincere sympathies to the family of Herbert Jackson "Jack" Bentley.

VICRORIA GAIL MULLINS

RUTLEDGE, TN – Victoria Gail Mullins, 71, our beloved “Gail Storm”, swept through life with a force of love, faith and unstoppable spirit.

She took every trial, every challenge and every hardship head-on, transforming pain into purpose and struggle into strength. To open your heart to love is to prepare it for pain, and she did both without hesitation. She loved fiercely, recklessly and without boundaries, leaving no one untouched by her warmth.

Gail was the heartbeat of our family, the glue that held us together when life tried to pull us apart. She carried an unshakeable faith in Jesus, sharing his love with everyone she met. Fear and doubt had no place where she stood-she embraced people fully, disarming even the heaviest hearts with her joy, her laughter and her unwavering

kindness. Social anxiety never stood a chance against her radiant spirit. She lit up every room she walked into, turning ordinary moments into unforgettable memories. Her creativity, grace and ability to love through pain made her truly one of a kind. She gave all of herself to the people she loved, never holding back, never giving less than everything.

Though our hearts are shattered, we take comfort in knowing that she has only gone ahead of us, waiting to welcome us home when our time comes. Until then, we will carry her legacy forward-living , loving

and holding on to the pieces of her that she so generously left in all of us. Our loss is great, but God is greater.

Clifton Edward Horne

GATE CITY, VA -Clifton Edward Horne, 75, Saw his faith end in sight on December 15, 2024, at the James H Quillen VA Medical Center when his last Earthly battle ended.

Born on April 1, 1949, in Pike County, Kentucky to the late Henry and Sarah (Gross) Horne; Clifton was also preceded in death by two brothers, Johnny, and Ray Horne, and one sister, Teresa Horne  Conway.

Those left to carry a lifetime of memories include his loving wife of 56 years, Nadine Horne, of the home. One daughter, Sharon Horne. One “Son he never had”, Very Special Nephew Danny Ray Sturgill (Missy) of Kingsport. Grandsons Hunter Hensley (Amanda), Avery Hall, Cyrus Rogers, and Taylor “TAS” Sturgill. One granddaughter, Katelyn Hall Williamson. Great-grandchildren Isaiah, Ashlynn, and Elijah Hensley. Special Son-In-Law Shane Hall. Brothers Dallas Horne, Mike (Ann) Horne, Tim (Tammy) Horne. Sisters Linda (David) Wright and Rita Bryant. And a host of nieces, nephews, and friends that this obituary could not hold.

There aren’t enough words to describe who this man was. Clifton was the jack of all trades, and master of most, whose life boasted an ARMY career that saw him receive a Ft Knox High Gunner Award in 1969. A business career that spanned 35 years as Kingsport’s radiator specialist, a car lot owner, and a coon hunting supplier. A hunting career that left raccoons across the region in fear, and the deer of Big Moccasin Creek in Hollywood lights. A family life that contained lessons that will never be forgotten and a love that can only be topped by Christ himself. Of all the things Clifton left behind the most important is the testimony of faith in Jesus Christ, who he found 35 years ago. He was a faithful member and deacon at Copper Creek (Addington Frame) Primitive Baptist Church. If he were writing this himself, he would want you to know that Jesus is the only way, and that is the only decision you will ever make that truly matters in the end. He was ALWAYS thinking & praying for others. He was tough as nails but had a heart as big as heaven. He couldn’t sleep if someone he knew was in trouble and he would do whatever he could to help them. There’s no doubt that when he got on his knees in Heaven Sunday morning, he was praising God and thanking Him for everything He’s done for him while he was here with us. He NEVER failed to give God all the praise & glory while here on earth. Now he gets to do it face to face forever. He was ready and that gives us peace.

The family will receive friends on Thursday December 19, 2024 from 5:00 pm till 7:00 pm at Poplar Grove Primitive Baptist Church (768 Poplar Grove Rd) in Kingsport, TN.  There will be a 7:00 pm evening service.

LAWRENCE DORTON

BRENDA SUE CRAWFORD

BRENDA SUE CRAWFORD

POUND, VA -Lawrence Dorton left this world unexpectedly on November 15th, 2024. He was surrounded with love and prayer at the time of his passing by his best friend and only son, Scott and his two granddaughters, Hannah and Cara at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee. Lawrence was born on August 20th, 1942 in Pound, Virginia and lived in the very same place where he was born, for all of his 82 years here on Earth.

Lawrence was of the Old Regular Baptist faith and attended various Old Regular Baptist churches in the area. As anyone who knew him would attest, he was the hardest working person you would ever meet. He wasn’t happy unless he was busy doing something productive and was very active until his last day here. He worked many years in the coal mines and retired from the UMWA. You would be hard-pressed to find a more dedicated and loyal union member! After retiring from the mines, he went on to operate an excavation company. Throughout his years of full-time work, he was also a cattle farmer and had various rental properties. In what little spare time he had, he loved riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, golfing, and was an avid outdoorsman.

Our Pap was always smiling, as soon as he laid eyes on us when we walked through the door, he lit up. Sometimes even shuffling his feet so that his cowboy boots tapped on the floor and dancing a little jig in a circle. We always felt important when we were with our Pap, he made sure of that. Even through some of our worst days together as a family, he was always so perfectly warm and would pull us into a tight hug, with our heads snuggled up under his white beard. “Don’t worry baby, Pap will fix it.” And he sure did. There was nothing that my family and I could throw at him that he wouldn’t figure out - even if it took two or three trips to the hardware store or a few late nights up under one of our sinks or in our basements, and we were all just ready to give up, Pap wasn’t going anywhere til it was done. And done RIGHT. He never had a problem checking other people’s handiwork along the way and letting them know when theirs wasn’t quite done right, too!

Pap took care of everyone and everything around him. There was hardly ever a day when deer or turkey or squirrels and birds weren’t standing outside his kitchen window, waiting on their favorite person to come outside with their feed and treats. He could call the cattle to him from a mile away with that big, booming voice of his, and the shrill, sharp whistles that I never could figure out how to do - but those cows of his always knew exactly who they were running towards.

Everyone we have spoken to this week said that my dad, my sister, and I were his pride and joy. And I don’t doubt that for a second, but they should have seen Pap with his little herd of great-grandsons! Pap never told Liam, Jackson, or Brody “no”, not even once that I can recall. He would lift them up into the bed of his truck, let them crawl all over his prized Harley Davidson motorcycle, take whatever they wanted from his kitchen cabinets (and his pockets), and get down in the floor to let them “waller” him whenever they asked. And his boys have always loved him so deeply! They adored going to Paps to go inside the huge playhouse that he built for Hannah and I when we were little. Granny kept so much stuff in there, it was always like a little cave full of hidden treasures to the boys. They were so amazed to know that their Pap built it with his own two hands. He could do anything.

While we are all completely devastated over this loss, we know that Pap and Granny are now united again in Heaven with no more sadness or worries and surrounded by their friends and family who passed on before them. What a sight that must have been.

In addition to his parents, Fritzie and Cara, Lawrence was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Deloras Ann Dorton, brother Festus Dorton, and sister, Mary Mullins.

His legacy, endless stories, and loving memories will be carried on by his surviving family members, including his adoring son Avery Scott Dorton - Bristol, TN, granddaughters Cara Paige Wingard and husband Kevin - Bristol, TN, Hannah Nicole Bishop and husband Aaron - Bristol, TN; great-grandchildren Liam Scott Wingard, Jackson Avery Wingard, and Brody Shey Bishop.

The family would also like to thank all of his many friends and family for their support after the passing of his darling wife, Deloras. Especially his breakfast buddy, Bud Kiser, and lifelong friends Roger Mullins and Don Stallard.

Funeral services will be held at Baker Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, November 19th at 2:00pm. The family will receive friends from 12:00pm until 2:00pm.

Burial will follow at the Arvil Mullins Cemetery in Pound, VA where Liam Wingard, Danny Cantrell, Larry Cantrell, Kevin Wingard, Aaron Bishop, and Mike Sawyers will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks everyone to please simply take time to hug or call your parents, grandparents, children, and friends. This is much more precious than gold.
