SHELIA TOMPKINS BATES POUND, VA – Shelia Tompkins Bates, 56, entered into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Friday February 5, 2016 from the University of Virginia Hospital- Charlottesville, VA after an extended illness. She was surrounded by her loving family. Shelia was born on May 16, 1959 in Chicago, Illinois. She was a Christian of the Baptist faith. She was loving mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. Shelia had worked at the Coalfield Progress for over 30 years and was the production manager at the time of her retirement. She was an avid reader, Stephen King being her favorites, loved going to concerts and listening to all types of music and playing games on her I Pad. Shelia was preceded in death by her father, Wilburn Tompkins; a sister, Mona Faye Tompkins and her long time furry companion, Gizmo. Survivors include her daughters, Mona Bates (Aaron)- Chuckey, TN and Monica Bates Kendrick (Samantha)-Pound, VA; four grandchildren which were the loves of her life, Shyla, Isaiah, Dylan and Hunter; her mother Phyllis Tompkins-Pound, VA; her sister, Theresa Tompkins (Robbie)-Bealeton VA; brother, Garrett Tompkins (Mary)- Pound, VA; her significant other, Jerome Jackson- Lebanon, VA; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn her passing and cherish her memory. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 pm Monday, February 8, 2016 at the Hamilton Chapel Church- Pound, VA with Reverend Greg Cyphers and Reverend Burns Robinson officiating. CHRISTINE MULLINS POUND, VA- Christine (Tucker) Mullins, 74, entered into Heaven, Friday February 5, 2016 from her residence with her loving family by her side. Christine was a Christian and attended the Church of God Prophecy in Pound, VA, She loved her Lord, reading her Bible and listening to gospel music gave her such peace of mind. Christine enjoyed gardening and loved her roses. She also enjoyed cooking family meals and spending time with her family. Christine was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Mullins, Jr.; her daughter, Rebecca Mullins; her parents, Milton and Minnie (Cox) Tucker; sisters, Ruby Cox, Clara Watts, Rachel Hall, Anna Lee Osborne and an infant daughter; two infant brothers; and her so-in-law, Monroe Meade. DANNY MULLINS POUND, VA – Danny Mullins, 65, entered into eternity Wednesday February 3, 2016 from his residence. He was surrounded by his loving family. Danny was of the Old Regular Baptist faith and a member of the Fairview Old Regular Baptist Church. He was a former coal miner and owned his own over the road truck for many years. Danny was also a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Vietnam War. Danny was a loving husband and father. He enjoyed the outdoors, doing yardwork and upkeep on his home. He also enjoyed working on cars and traveling, but really enjoyed spending time with his family. Danny was preceded in death his son, Paul Darnell Mullins; his parents, Darrel and Flossie Mullins; a sister, Della Bush; and a brothers Terry Mullins and Ronnie Mullins. LEATRICE JOY GROVES ALEXANDRIA, VA - Mrs. Leatrice Joy Groves, 86, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday February 3 , 2016 from her sons home in Alexandria, VA after an extended illness. She was surrounded by her loving family. Leat was a former resident of Pound, VA, having moved back to Alexandria to be near her children and grandchildren. She was a Christian of the Baptist faith and a member of the Hope Freewill Baptist Church of Pound, VA. Leat was a loving sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She loved spending time with her family and friends and also enjoyed attending church. Leat had been a caretaker for many years, she loved her job caring for elderly people and formed special bonds with them. Leat was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Groves; her parents, Wayne and Maize (Sowards) Branham; and her sisters, Deborah Roush and Sue Carol Cox. ARLIE COLLIER SR. POUND, VA- Arlie “Papaw” Collier, 80, entered into eternity Tuesday January 26, 2016 from the Heritage Hall Health Care-Big Stone Gap, VA after an extended illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. Arlie was born on May 23, 1935, the son of the late Otis and Mary (Raleigh) Collier of Pound, VA He worked in the trucking and logging industry most of his life, loved to travel ( he was always ready to go to Oregon), enjoyed farming and hunting and spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, Arlie was preceded in death by his wife Arlene Collier; a grandson, Shawn Collier; and four brothers, Arnold Collier, Millard Collier, Monroe Collier and Chester Collier. WILLIAM DALLAS BOLLING WISE, VA – William (Bill) Bolling, 81, is now absent from the body, but present with the Lord. He passed away January 19, 2016 from his residence in Wise, VA. William was a born again Christian , baptized in water, and of the Holy Ghost. His desire was that everyone be born again. William was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during the Korean War on the USS Twining where he received two combat battle stars. Wiliam retired from the civil service after 30 years of service as a computer systems analyst. His endeavors in genealogy was almost a full time job. Unfortunately, he never succeeded in finding the parents of Benjamin Bolling (1734-1832) and Charity Larrimore. William was preceded in death by his loving wife of Yvonne Suggs Bolling, his high school sweetheart; his parents, Bennie and Ella (Sturgill) Bolling; and brothers; Herbert Bolling and Palmer Bolling. She enjoyed being outdoors and fishing, But her greatest joy was the time she spent with her grandchildren. They always put a smile on her face when she saw them. DAVID MAX MULLINS Wise, VA – David Max Mullins, 68, entered into his eternal destiny Wednesday January 6, 2016 from the Holston Valley Medical Center-Kingsport, TN after an extended illness. Mr. Mullins was of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Vietnam War. During his military career, he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal with 3Bronze Loops, and the Expert Rifle Medal. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Max worked until his retirement as a heavy equipment (hauler) operator. Max was a member of the American Legion Post in Jenkins, KY and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #56 where he was a lifetime member of the Comander’s Club. Max enjoyed fishing, camping and just being in the outdoors. He was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather and uncle. Max was preceded in death by his parents, Henderson Herbert Mullins and Anita Jane Mullins; brothers, Ronnie and Donnie Mullins; an infant brother and an infant sister. GERRIE GAIL STURGILL POUND, VA- Gerrie Gail Sturgill, 68, passed away Wednesday December 30, 2015 from her sons residence in Pound, VA with her loving family by her side. Gerrie was a Christian of the Baptist faith. She was a homemaker and loved taking care of her family. Gerrie also enjoyed watching westerns and Days of Our Lives on TV. Being outside gave her such great joy and peace, especially watching the birds and natures beauty. MARK A. McGUIRE POUND, VA – Mark “Grubby” McGuire, 50, entered into eternity Saturday December 12, 2015 from the Bristol Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. His loving family was by his side. Mark believed in God. He was a former surface miner with over 30 years of experience. He worked as a drill operator and a certified blaster for A&G Coal, Baden Reclamation, Austin Powder, and New World Mining. Mark was a hard worker and believed in taking care of his family. He liked to hunt and fish and just ramble through the woods. He loved to ride four wheelers. Mark was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lorene (Adams) McGuire; a sister, Sandy Lynn McGuire; a brother, Jimmy McGuire; and a niece, Shannon Dotson Hill. HOBERT ROSS BOLLING SR. POUND, VA – Ross Bolling, 78, entered into eternity Thursday December 10, 2015 from the Bristol Hospice House after an extended illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. Ross was a Christian, he was a machinist for over 50 years, a welder and an original partner in the Southwest Kawasaki Shop. Ross was a member of the Pound Masonic Lodge #59 AF & AM for 49 ½ years, he was Past Lodge Master, Past Grand High Priest, Past District Deputy Grand Master; and Past District Deputy Grand High Priest. Ross was a jack of all trades and could fix almost anything. He loved his machine shop and motorcycle shop, and riding and repairing motorcycles. His motto was "Keep your helmet on". He enjoyed people and never met a stranger. He also enjoyed bluegrass music and loved his dog, Midnight. Ross was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon (Yates) Bolling; his parents, Baxter N. and Eura (Hamilton) Bolling; sisters, Genevieve Moore, Garnett Cross, Opal Whitaker and Iris Cox; and brothers Richard Bolling and Vardrey Bolling. MARY CATHERINE MAYES NORA, VA – Mary Catherine Mayes, 78, entered into her eternal reward Wednesday December 9, 2015 from Heritage Hall–Big Stone Gap, VA after an extended illness. Mary was a Christian and attended McClellan Chapel Church-Coeburn, VA She was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Mary was a social butterfly, she had a vibrant personality and loved people. She could light up a room and never met a stranger. Mary also loved to cook and prepare meals for her family and friends. She also enjoyed gardening, canning, preserving and quilting. Mary loved music, especially bluegrass, and spending time with her family. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Troy and Ada (Mullins) Salyers; her husband Delmer Harold Mayes; sisters, Tina Hicks and Marie Hileman; and brothers, Troy Salyers Jr., Paul Salyers, Fred Salyers and Gene Bevel.
