SAMMY GUY CHESTER POUND, VA- Sammy Guy “Sam” Chester, 60, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday January 15, 2017 from the Pikeville Medical Center after an extended illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. Sam was such an inspiration to many of us. He was an amazing husband to his beautiful wife of nearly 37 years Nora Chester, an honorable father to his sons, Jeremy and John John and an awesome grandfather to his grandchildren. His inspiration is led by the numerous medical predicted outcomes that he proved to be wrong. He has survived multiple heart attacks, four wheeler accidents, heart surgeries and hip surgeries. Meeting this man in person, you would never have believed what all he had been though and overcame. He was the most kind hearted individual and just an all around amazing person to everyone. Last year we found out that Sam was diagnosed with Small Cell Carcinoma in the right lung. He didn’t let that stop him though. He persevered through treatments and radiation. In July we found out that Sam was in remission! We were blessed, as this type of cancer typically doesn’t go into remission. A few months later, he started getting weak again and we found out in December the cancer bounced back in the same place as the last time, the right lung. Sam was tired but still told us he wouldn’t give up. As 23 days passed with him being in numerous hospitals, he said that he was finally ready to be with the Lord. After a long, hard fought battle with cancer, Sam finally won. He gained his angel wings and is suffering no more pain. Sam was of the Pentecostal faith and was a retired miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He had lots of friends, but his closest friend was his son Jeremy. Sam enjoyed four wheeling, camping, shooting guns and talking to with his CB buddies, his handle being ”Riverboat Gambler”. He was an avid Washington Redskins fan and Tennessee Volunteer football fan and enjoyed watching the Discovery Channel. But spending time with his family was what he loved and cherished the most. Sam was preceded in death by his mother Naomi Chester on September 27, 2012; a sister, Connie Krebs; and a niece, Melissa Krebs. Survivors include his loving wife, Nora Chester-Pound, VA; his sons, Jeremy Chester and wife Chelsea-Pound, VA; John Turner- Pound, VA; grandchildren, Chase Polly, Greyson Chester, Lee Polly, Jayden Chester, Breanna Turner and Caleb Brickey; his father, Guy Chester-Wise, VA; a sister, Kathy Chester- Wise, VA; a brother. John Chester and wife Sheila- Burlan, KY; several nieces, nephews and cousins; his little companion, Milo and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn his passing and cherish his memory.
