DANIEL D. VANHUSS, SR. POUND, VA – Daniel D. VanHuss, Sr., 72, entered into eternity Thursday April 17, 2014 from the Holston Valley Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. Daniel was of the Baptist faith and was a heavy equipment operator with nearly 40 years experience at Ison Coal Company and A&G Coal. He loved tinkering around the house, mechanicing, hunting ginseng, fishing, doing yardwork and cooking, especially peanut butter candy. Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, Roy C. VanHuss, Sr. and Pauline (Parsons) VanHuss; and brothers, Coy VanHuss and Roger Kyle VanHuss. Survivors include his loving wife, Faye (Roberts) VanHuss-Pound, VA; a daughter, Donna McCarter and husband Robert-Columbia, SC; sons, Daniel D. VanHuss, Jr. –Pound, VA, William J. MILDRED C. O’DELL POUND, VA – Mrs. Mildred C. O’Dell, 90, entered into eternity Wednesday April 16, 2014 from her residence. She was surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. O’Dell was a Christian and member of the Christ Lutheran Church in Wise for more than 20 years. She retired in 1994 as director of nursing for Norton Community Hospital. She was a registered nurse for more than 30 years. Mildred was a member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed spending time with her family, hosting family events, dining out and traveling with Flaudean Bolling. Mrs. O’Dell was preceded in death by her husband, Billy F. O’Dell, her parents, Worley and Kathryn (Ringle) Collier; two sisters, Margaret Evers and Alice Jones; and three brothers, Paul Collier, Wesley Collier and Billy Collier. Survivors include her daughters Chantale Whittaker and husband Greg-Pound, VA and Sherry Blalock and husband Brent-Sevierville, TN; grandchildren, Bill Countiss and wife Tammy-Knoxville, TN, Ashli Christen and husband Everette-Maryville, TN and Ali Luffler and husband Chris-New Albany, OH; great-grandchildren, Chelsea Smith, Seth Colyer, Landon Beaux Whittaker, Spencer Christen, Reed Lufler, Jude Lufler and Lincoln Lufler; several neices , nephews and cousins; her life long friend, Flaudean Bolling; and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn her loss and cherish her memory. ROSS EDWARD MEADE DALLAS, GA – Mr. Ross Edward Meade, age 72, passed away Sunday April 13, 2014 at Wellstar Paulding Hospital. Mr. Meade was born on September 29, 1941 in Pound, VA, the son of the late Carl Bruce Meade and Ada Mullins Meade. He worked in construction doing sheetrock and was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed reading, gardening, and weaving baskets. He was very crafty and very good at weaving In addition to his parents, Ross was preceded in death by his brother, William Nick Meade; sisters, Charlotte Meade Lane and Bannie Hanes; and an infant brother, Boake Robin Meade. Mr. Meade is survived by his wife, Margene Harris; three children, Carl Meade, Tommy Meade and Missy Meade; eight step-children; a brother, Wallace Meade of Pound, VA; two sisters, Zelma Aichel of Wise, VA and Betty Jo Bolling of Pound, VA; step-grandchildren, Jennifer Strickland and cxaleb Slater; several nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends Funeral services for Mr. meade wqill be held on wednewsday April 16, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of the Jeff Eberhart Funeral Home with Rev. EARL LEWIS MORGAN POUND, VA- Earl Lewis Morgan, 87, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday April 3, 2014 from the Norton Community Hospital after an extended illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. Lewis was a child of God, he was former welder for US Steel/Arch Minerals for nearly 30 years, he was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and a veteran of the United States Army having served during WWII. Earl was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Edell Potter Morgan; his second wife, Audrey Mullins Morgan; a son Phillip Morgan; his parents, Earl Lewis Morgan, Sr. and Sally (Bailey) Morgan; son-in-law, Gary Roberts; grandchildren, Libby Cantrell and Jonathan Roberts; step-grandson, Preston Dingus; and a brother Jim Morgan. MICHAEL LYNN THOMAS PENNINGTON GAP/NORTON, VA - Michael Lynn Thomas, 59, entered into eternity Tuesday April 1, 2014 from the Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, VA. Michael was a former coal miner with approximately 25 years of experience and a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was an avid outdoorsman, he loved working outside, mechanicing, hiking, fishing, gardening and cooking. His two favorite activities were hanging out with Becky and riding his Harley Davidson and although he was a man of large stature, he could be as gentle as a lamb, always putting the needs of others before his own. Michael was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ruth (Gibson) Thomas; and his brothers, Johnny Thomas and Ralph (Cotton) Thomas. Survivors include his fiancé and companion of ten years, Rebecca Myrick-Norton, VA; sons, Dustin Fleming and Jordan Fleming-Norton, VA; grandchildren, Bryson Fleming and Brystol Fleming; special friends, Nate West and Donnie and Kaye West- Pound, VA; three nieces, and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn his passing and cherish his memory. ROGER WAYNE MULLINS POUND, VA – Roger Wayne Mullins, 72, entered into eternity Friday March 28, 2014 from the Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Norton, VA. He was surrounded by his loving family. Roger was a Christian of the Baptist faith, he attended Emanuel Baptist Church in Jenkins, KY. He was a former underground and surface miner and member of the United Mine Workers of America as well as a former employee for Saffrin Printing in Detroit, MI and was also a veteran of the United States Army. Roger was a loving husband, father and brother. He enjoyed working in and around his house, He was meticulous about his yard work and keeping the family cemetery neat and clean. He also loved hiking though the woods, fishing, watching the weather channel, collecting rocks of all shapes and sizes especially ones with geological anomalies. He enjoyed sweets and a good cup of McDonalds coffee. Roger was also counting down the days for the arrival of his very first granddaughter, Alexis Sue rose. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Preston “Little Henry” and Mabel(Davis)Mullins; a sister, Marlene Trent and a brother, Paul E. Mullins. EDNA VIRGINIA STALLARD POUND, VA – Mrs. Edna Virginia Stallard, 73, went home to be with the Lord and her family members before her on Thursday March 27, 2014 from Heritage Hall in Clintwood, VA. Mrs. Stallard was a born again child of God, she was a former cook at several area restaurants, including Shannon’s, Robos, Sunrise and the Front Porch. She was also homemaker and a devoted wife, mother , grandmother and sister. She enjoyed spending time with her family and playing with her grandkids, going to church, playing Bingo and going to the flea market. Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Donnie Harold Stallard; a son, Donald “Duck” Stallard; and her parents Lester and Della (Church) Carmony. DORIS ANN DAVIS WISE, VA - Miss Doris Ann Davis, 70, entered into eternity Sunday March 23, 2014 from the Holston Valley Medical Center- Kingsport, TN with her family by her side. Doris was of the Christian faith with a great love for God and attended the Church of God. She was a loving daughter, sister and friend. Her mother was her best friend and lifetime companion. She enjoyed cross stitching, watching old movies and spending time with her family and friends. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Denver Bruce and Opal ( Bryant) Davis; and her sisters, Vickie Kay Mullins and Mary Cantrell. CHELSEY NICOLE HERRINGTON BELEWS CREEK, NC – Chelsey Nicole Harrington, 20, entered into Heaven on Friday March 21, 2014 after injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Chelsea was a child of God. She was a 2012 graduate of East Forsythe High School in Kernersville, NC and was currently student at Greensboro Technical and Community College in the culinary arts program. She was also an employee of Lowes Foods for 3 ½ years and was currently working in the floral department. Chelsea was a humble and loving soul, kind and generous to everyone she knew. She loved a variety of music especially, Chris Lane and Chris Daughtry; she loved shopping, jewelry, singing, dancing and cooking, making people smile, social media, her cell phone, working out at the gym and her little red car. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved her. She was a wonderful daughter and sister, and although she was very responsible and independent she could charm Mom and bat her eyes at Dad whenever she needed a little something. Chelsea was preceded in death by her grandfather, Allen Curtis “Bud” Collins and her great aunt Pat Collins. DONALD TOMPKINS JENKINS, KY- Donald Tompkins, 50, entered into eternity Friday March 21, 2014 from his residence. Donald was a Christian of the Freewill Baptist faith, he was a former preacher and Member of Pine Chapel Church in Jenkins, KY. He enjoyed music of many types, his pets, fishing, collecting knives and lighters and having big dinners with his family and friends. He was a devoted son, taking care of his mother, Ethel Tompkins, until her death on July 2, 2013. In addition to his mother, Donald was preceded in death by his father, Warren G. Tompkins,a brother, Harold Eugene Tompkins, and a nephew, Michael Tompkins. STEVEN HUGH BOGGS POUND, VA – Steven Hugh Boggs, 58, entered into his eternal reward Friday March, 14, 2014 from the Pikeville Medical Center after an extended illness. He was surrounded by his loving family. Steve was a Christian of the Baptist faith. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was a jack-of-all-trades, having retired as a retired coal miner with 26 years of service at Pittston Coal. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and former financial and recording secretary for them. He was currently an employee of the Wildcat Convenience store in Pound, VA and had also worked PCH/Cumberland River Coal, Beverly Racing Enterprises and Palmers Plumbing Service. Steve enjoyed doing carpentry work, mechanicing, gardening and spending time with his family and friends. He loved playing with “ Papaw’s Sasquatch” and riding her on the riding mower. REVEREND ARLIE EDWARD CHURCH POUND, VA – Reverend Arlie Edward Church, 89, entered into the Kingdom of God Wednesday March 12, 2014 from Heritage Hall-Clintwood, VA after an extended illness. Arlie was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He was an ordained Baptist Minister and a member of the Cane Patch Primitive Baptist Church and attended services in many area churches. He was a former grocery manager for N&W Grocery in Maryland for many years and a security manager for the Co-Op Grocery Company also. Arlie was preceded in death by his parents, William and Viola (Picklesylver) Church and nine brothers and sisters. GOLDIE MAE HOPKINS POUND, VA - Goldie Mae Hopkins, 76, entered into eternity Tuesday March 4, 2014 from the Mountain View Hospital-Norton, VA . She was surrounded by her loving family. Goldie was a Christian of the Baptist faith. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, sister and friend. She was the matriarch and the “glue” that held the family together. She enjoyed cooking, canning and preserving, cleaning house but her biggest joy was spending time with her family. Goldie was preceded in death by her husband, Coy Hopkins; a daughter, Kathy Lee Hopkins; her parents, Ed and Flora (Wright) Rose; a sister, Judy Garnell; and her brothers, Odus Rose, Wesley Rose and Ray Rose. FRANCIS STANLEY POUND, VA- Francis (Dorton) Stanley, 79, entered into her eternal reward Sunday March 2, 2014 from the Mountain View Regional Hospital after an extended illness. She was surrounded by her loving family who had never left her side. Francis was a Christian and a member of Pyles Memorial Freewill Baptist Church for 37 years. She enjoyed singing and sang for many years with The Family Gospelaires. On April 16, 1947 she became the wife of Donald Lee Stanley, a union which stood the test of time for 65 years and they were blessed with the birth of three children. Francis enjoyed painting, reading, cooking and baking, traveling and family trips. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Francis was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Ota (Hollyfield) Dorton; a baby boy, Randy Lee Stanley; and a sister, Ruble Hill; Survivors include her loving and devoted husband, Donald Lee Stanley- Pound, VA; daughter, Rebecca (Becky) Collins -Pound, VA; son, Michael (Mike) Stanley and wife Suzy, Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren, Justin Collins-Pound, VA and Jarrett Lee Stanley and wife Suzanne-Virginia Beach, VA; special nephew Danny Stanley and wife Agnes, whom she loved like a son and daughter; special great-nephew Grant Stanley and his daughter, Shelby Aliza Stanley; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Lawrence and Delores Dorton, Eileen Mullins and Debra Rife; her church family; and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn her passing and cherish her memory. JESSICA ELISE McARTHUR CLARK WISE, VA – Jessica Elise McArthur Clark, 28, entered into eternity Saturday, January 21, 2012. Jessica was a 2001 honor graduate of J. J. Kelly High School, Wise, Virginia, where she was a member of the track team and the varsity cheerleaders. She was of the Christian faith and was baptized at the Wise Church of God. She attended UVA-Wise and was currently enrolled in the Funeral Service Program at Mountain Empire Community College. She was Office Manager and Funeral Service Apprentice at her family’s business, Baker Funeral Home, Pound, VA. Jessica loved her family dearly, especially her brother, Alex. She loved animals all her life and had two special Yorkies, Maggie and Makiah. Jessica had a kind spirit, had friends of all ages, and tried to help everyone in any way she possibly could. Jessica was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Harold Ray McArthur, and her maternal grandparents, Jesse “Sambo” and Dorothy Jane Bright. Survivors include her father, Bo McArthur, and stepmother, Crystal, Pound, VA; her mother, Carlotta Steele, and stepfather, Gary, Wise, VA; her beloved brother, Alex McArthur, Wise, VA; her boyfriend, Vlad Palabrica, Wise, VA; her stepbrothers, Brandon Steele, Statesville, NC, and Josh May, Pikeville, KY; stepsisters, Brittany Steele, Statesville, NC, and Samantha May, Pikeville, KY; her paternal grandmother, Bessie McArthur, Norton, VA; her stepgrandparents, James and Loretta Steele, Castlewood, VA; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; and a host of friends and loved ones, to mourn her passing and cherish her memory.
