VERA MAE SOWARDS POUND, VA – Mrs. Vera Mae Sowards, 86, went home to be with the Lord and her family members who passed before her on Monday October 16, 2017 from her residence in Pound, VA. She was surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Sowards was a Christian of the Old Regular Baptist faith. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. Vera was a former cook at several restaurants in the Pound area, she enjoyed quilting, working in the garden and her flowers, puzzle books, and watching TV, especially Golden Girls and gameshows. Her greatest joy though were the family get togethers. Mrs. Sowards was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Sowards; her parents, Troy and Martha (Sturgill) Engle; a grandson, Cody Johnson; her son-in-law Roger Craft; her sisters Jean Hunsucker, Nina Hobbs and Olga Hampton; and her brothers, Bill Engle, Junior Engle and Chalmer Engle. Survivors include her daughters, Jackie Short and husband Danny-Pound, VA, Martha Blankenship-Pound, VA, Irma Perry and husband Onsby- Nickelsville, VA and Carol Sue Craft-Pound, VA; sons, Teddy Sowards and wife Nancy-Pound, VA and Stacy Sowards and wife Tammie-Pound, VA; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; a brother Charles Engle and wife Delores-Payne Gap, KY; several nieces and nephews; special nieces and friends, Lena Stallard and Terri Shortt; and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn her passing and cherish her memory. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 pm Wednesday October 18, 2017 in the Baker Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Mark Stallard and Danny Short officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until time of services. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 am Thursday October 19, 2017 at the Sowards Family Cemetery on Big Branch-Pound, VA where grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:00 am to prepare to go in procession to the cemetery. BRITTANY NICOLE WILLIAMS POUND, VA – Brittany Nicole Williams, 23, passed away Tuesday October 10, 2017 from the Mountain View Regional Medical Center- Norton ,VA. Brittany was of the Pentecostal faith. She was a former student of John I Burton High School in Norton, VA. Brittany had worked at Sykes and other places before becoming a full time homemaker and mother to her son. She was a loving and devoted mother to her beloved son Abel “Willie” Williams. She was also a loving wife, daughter, sister and friend. Brittany enjoyed reading , writing, and listening to all types of music. But her greatest pleasure was caring for her son Abel, who was born March 3, 2015. JERRY WAYNE HOBBS POUND, VA- Jerry Wayne “Pockets” Hobbs, 68, passed away peacefully from his home on October 10, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer. His loving wife was by his side. Jerry was a Christian of the Methodist faith. Jerry was a veteran of the United States Navy and was a former surface miner, working for Ison Coal, Paramont Coal and the former owner and operator of Hobbs Trucking. He enjoyed yardwork, gardening, watching movies, mostly action /western, watching NASCAR racing and was an avid fan of Bill Elliott and then Chase Elliott. He was a true” Ford Man” Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Lee “Rawhide” Hobbs and Carolyn (Tipton) Hobbs and a brother, Jeffery ”Hooter” Hobbs. JAMES ROY BAKER POUND, VA- James Roy “Crid” Baker, 78, passed away Tuesday October 3, 2017 from Holston Valley Medical Center after an extended illness. James was a retired coal miner with approximately 20 years of service. He was a mountain man and loved to go squirrel hunting and hiking the hills for ginseng. James also enjoyed a good chew of tobacco when he could. James is preceded in death by his parents, Linkous and Dorothy (Puckett) Baker; sisters, Elma Lowe and Brenda Harris; brothers, Norman Baker, Bruce Baker and Otis Baker. ILENE BOGGS POUND, VA – Ilene Boggs, 87, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Wednesday –September 27, 2017 from her daughter’s home in Pound, VA. Her loving family was at her bedside. Ilene was a Christian and loved the Lord, she was a member of Hamilton Chapel Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, great- great grandmother, sister (she was like a second mother to her siblings) and friend. She enjoyed quilting, growing her flowers, and traveling with her family. Ilene was a hard worker and instilled in her family an attitude of helping others. Ilene was preceded in death by her husband, Vernoy Boggs; a son, Preston Alan Boggs; her parents, Arvil and Blanche Effie (Meade) Hurt; sisters, Savannah Austin and husband Carl, Ann Austin and husband Jim and Virgie Schuitema and husband John; a brother, Don Hurt and special nephew, Brad Hurt. SAMUEL BRANHAM CHESAPEAKE, VA- Samuel Branham, 83, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday September 26, 2017 from the Dickenson Community Hospital. His loving daughter and son-in-law was at his side. Samuel was a former resident of Pound, VA before moving to eastern Virginia. He was of the Pentecostal faith and attended the Cornerstone Church of God in Norfolk, VA. He was a retired supply clerk for the Naval Air Station. Samuel enjoyed and was well accomplished at playing the guitar, banjo, bass and mandolin and even performed in an opening act for Johnny Cash at the Hampton Colliseum. He also liked to go squirrel hunting, fishing, working in his garden and canning what he grew. But his greatest pleasure was the time he had with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. ALICE MAE HALL KINGSPORT, TN – Alice Mae Hall, 87, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday September 18, 2017 from the Wexford House. She was surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Hall was a Christian of the Freewill Baptist faith and attended Orbank Freewill Baptist Church. She was born June 18 , 1930 in Jenkins, KY. Alice was a home maker and sold Avon for many years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Alice also enjoyed going to church, traveling and going shopping. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Hobart and Dora (Griffith) Castle; her son, Claude Martin Hall; and a sister, Dorothy Price. Survivors include her loving husband of 63 years, Willie J. PAUL K ADDAIR WAR, WV – Paul K Addair, 62, passed away peacefully at his home Thursday September 14, 2017. Mr. Addair was born in Welch, WV on July 16, 1955. He was a life-long resident of McDowell County, West Virginia. He was the son of the late Cleveland R. Addair and the late Ona Mae Sweeney Addair of Atwell, WV. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Addair. Paul was a Christian of the Pentecostal faith.. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was a retired security guard with 30 + years of experience. He enjoyed hunting and sports, especially the WVU Mountaineers. He also enjoyed reality TV shows. Mr. addair is survived by his wife of 41 years, Linda K. Addair of War. WV; one son Michael P. Addair and wife Carla of Hurricane, WV; two grandsons , Vincent and Elijah Addair; three brothers, Buddy Addair of Welch, WV, Roger Addair of Atwell, WV and Donald Addair and wife Connie of Atwell, WV; two sisters Ocie Ledford of Lakeland, FL and Alice Blankenship of Bramwell, WV; and a host of family and friends to mourn his passing and cherish his memory. KENT PATRICK STAPLETON POUND, VA- Kent Stapleton, 59, passed away Tuesday September 5, 2017 from his home. Kent was of the Christian faith. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, going fishing and just liked having “a good ole time”. Kent was preceded in death by his father, Delmer Stapleton and a sister, Mary Lou Lyon and two brothers, Kurtis Ray Stapleton and Jackie Lee Stapleton. DORSIE “TOOTIE” DOTSON COEBURN , VA- Dorsie “Tootie” Dotson, 75,entered into eternity Wednesday August 30, 2017from the Holston Valley Medical Center-Kingsport, TN Her loving family was at her bedside. Dorsie was a Christian of the Baptist faith. She attended Old Regular Baptist Church and Freewill Baptist Churches. Tootie enjoyed camping, sewing, quilting and working in her flower garden. She loved to watch her grandkids play ball, she loved to travel and attending church. JUDITH MULLINS POUND, VA – Judith (Judy) Mullins, 77, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday August 30, 2017 from her residence. She was surrounded by her loving family. Judy was of the Baptist faith. She was a devoted Christian and loved the Lord. Judywas a member and an Awana teacher at Ridgeview Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She enjoyed watching television sitcoms and crime shows. Also she liked gospel music and the oldies. Judy loved to jitter bug. In high school she played basketball and won the Miss Chester County Pageant. But mostly, she loved spending time with her family and friends. Judy was preceded in death by her parents Duard Benson, Sr. and Francis C. (Winters) Benson; and a nephew, Little Lee; and her special friend, Claire Newkirk. She was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She enjoyed time with her family and friends. KAREN LYNN FULKS POUND, VA - Karen Lynn Fulks, 51, passed away Friday August 18, 2017 from the Holston Valley Medical Center-Kingsport, TN after an extended illness. She was surrounded by her loving family. Karen was of the Baptist faith. She was a former retail cashier and a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandson, Zach. MANFORD D. MOORE DUFFIELD, VA – Manford D. Moore, 80, passed away peacefully Tuesday August 15, 2017at his residence. His loving family was at his side. Manford was a Christian of the Baptist faith. VERA LEA MULLINS POUND, VA- Vera Lea Mullins, 80, went to be with her Lord on Saturday August 12, 2017 after enduring a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was dedicated to her family and showed them over and over what it meant to be strong and to fight and never give up. She was such an inspiration to us in so many ways. She never followed anyone’s rules but her own during her sickness. She didn’t give into cancer until it over took her in a way that she could not battle any longer. BENJAMIN EDWARD MULLINS LOS ANGELES, CA- Benjamin Edward Mullins, 52, formally of Pound, VA passed away July 6, 2017 at Loma Linda Hospital in California after a courageous battle with cancer. Ben was a former LPD quarterback for Pound High School and also played basketball, baseball and ran track. After high school, he joined the United States Army from 1984-1987. There he met and married Monica Covarrubias in this union they had two children Justin and Kelsey Mullins. Ben moved back to Virginia in 2016 to be with his family after being diagnosis with cancer. He was known and loved by everyone and left a lasting impression on all he knew. He never judged and always saw the good in people. He had many interests, but music was his favorite. He loved spending time with family and friends. He lived life to the fullest and had a sense of humor that would always put a smile on your face. People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did but people will never forget how you made them feel. ROY ELMER STEFFEY, SR. WISE, VA- Roy Elmer Steffey, Sr., 81, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday July 4, 2017 from his son David’s home in Wise VA. He was surrounded by his loving family. Roy had lived the majority of his life in Castlewood, VA. Roy was Christian of the Pentecostal faith and attended the House of the Lord Church. He was never in a war, but he fault many battles. Roy was a proud and strong man that never backed down from anyone or anything. He along with his wife of 45 years, Freda raised 12 children. He was a dad that touched many lives. He loved camping, fishing and picnicking at Copper Creek. Roy worked hard all his life from a young teen till his late 70’s . Roy worked in the tire business for nearly 40 years and other jobs at one time to provide for his needs of his family, but they never did without food or love. He raised a big garden each year, giving most of it away to family and friends. “Tough as a Pine knot” his physical strength, endurance and hard work was what he was known for. He instilled a lot of his strength in his children, raising them in the church and taught them to be strong in the Lord and trust in God and have strong character. Roy was preceded in death by his parents George and Anne (Meade)Steffey; his wife Freda Blanch (Hurd) Steffey; a daughter Rebecca Gail Adams; sisters Goldie White, Beulah Hurd, Helen Hurd and Gladys Hurd; and brothers Bill Steffey, Jack Steffey, Clarence Steffey and Pete Steffey. Survivors include his daughters, Sheila Adams and husband Rodney-Whitesburg, KY, Chris Guinnip and husband Rodger-Evening Shade AR, Freda Smith and husband Sammy-Booneville, NC, Sarah Mullins and husband Shawn-Wise, VA, Sonja Lomax and husband Sean-Big Stone Gap, VA and Susan Steffey -Greenville, TN; his sons, Roy Steffey, Jr. and wife Tamera-Wise, VA, Ben Steffey and wife Pam-Pound, VA, David Steffey and wife Kathy-Wise, VA, James Steffey and companion Cherie Blanton- Castlewood, VA and Michael Steffey and companion Velvet Carty-Wise, VA; 30 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn his passing and cherish his memory. The family would like to give a special thanks to his Hospice caregivers, Mary, Pam, Christie, Tabatha and Selena for taking such good care of our dad. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 pm Thursday July 6, 2017 at the House of the Lord-Little Jerusalem Church at 2680 Red Oak Ridge Road, Castlewood, VA 24224 with Reverend Teddy Phillips, Reverend Curtis Dalton and Reverend Donnie Pickett officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00pm until time of services. Graveside committal services will be conducted at 11:00 am Friday July 7, 2017 at Temple Hill Memorial Park-Castlewood, VA where Robby Hartsock, Chad Steffey, D J Steffey, Justin Floroff, Michael Steffey, Dennis Roberts, Jr., Jacob Steffey and Sammy Smith will serve as pallbearers. Family and friends are asked to meet at the House of the Lord-Little Jerusalem Church by 10:00 am to prepare to go in procession to the cemetery. WILLIAM (BUCK) MULLINS EOLIA, KY- William (Buck) Mullins, 79, passed away Monday July 3, 2017 from the Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center in Hazard, KY. His family was at his bedside. Buck was a retired surface coal miner with 35plus years of experience. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening when he was able. He liked to travel and enjoyed driving. Buck was preceded in death by his parents, Crate and Davella Mullins ; his wife Betty (Maples) Mullins; an infant daughter Dana Mullins and a sister, Janice Mullins Survivors include his companion, Blanche Latimer; his daughters, DeRhonda Lewis and husband David-Lynch, KY, Debbie Sturgill and husband Harold-Pound, VA, Donna Cantrell and husband Tim-Pound, VA and Diane Bippus and husband Tim-Pound, VA; his sons, Jeff Mullins and wife Rosezell- Partidge, KY, Jerry Mullins and fiancé Debbie Hampton-Bean Station, TN and James Allen Mullins and wife Alicia-Nicholasville, KY; his grandchildren, David, DeWayne, Makeisha, Miranda, Myriah, Michael, Anthony, Julia, Jason, Megan, LaDonna, Cari, Emmanuel, Sarah Beth, Ethan, Justin, Emily and Nathan;16 great-grandchildren;1 great-great-grand- daughter; a sister; Landa Wright and husband Leo- Indiana; a brother, Randall Mullins- Kentucky; special friends, James and Janet Gibson several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends and loved ones.
