MSgt CHESTER COLLIER- BYRON, GA- Retired Master Sergeant Chester “Check” Collier, 71, went to be with the Lord on August 10, 2014. MSgt Collier was a Christian of the Baptist faith. He retired from the United States Air Force after serving his country for 26 years then worked for 14 years as a civil service employee at Robins Air Force Base working on C-5 transport planes. Chester enjoyed working on all types of engines, restoring old cars and working with his honey bees, but what gave him his greatest joy was spending time with his family and playing with his grandchildren. Chester was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Mary (Raleigh) Collier and three brothers, Arnold Collier, Millard Collier and Monroe Collier. Survivors are his devoted wife of 49 years, LaWanda (VanHuss) Collier; a son Roy Otis Collier-Inman, SC; daughters and sons in law, Jennifer Collier Maxwell and Michael- Evans, GA; Deborah Collier Strelec and John-Grovetown, GA ; five grandsons, Brian, Stephen and Zachary Maxwell, Andrew Berry and Adam Strelec; four brothers, Arlie Collier, Cecil Collier and Larry Collier- all of Pound, VA and Douglas Collier-Oven Fork, KY; three sisters Mabel Mullins-Pound, VA; Edith Dippery-Flint, MI and Rhonda Peake- Texas; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn his passing and cherish his memory. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 pm Friday August 15, 2014 in the Sadie Baker Memorial Chapel with Reverend Jimmie Slemp and Reverend Johnny Johnson officiating. The Pound VFW Post 9600 will perform military honors. The family will receive friends from 5:00pm until time of services. Full military funeral honors will be conducted at 11:00 am Saturday August 16, 2014 at the Dewey Memorial Cemetery- Pound, VA by the United States Air Force Honor Guard. PEARL HOPKINS COUNTISS POUND, VA – Mrs. Pearl Hopkins Countiss, 104, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on August 7, 2014. Mrs. Countiss was of the Christian faith and was a member of the Mt. Zion Old Regular Baptist for approximately 50 years. She was a homemaker and a former clerk in her family’s general store. She loved to reminisce about the store and the customers and about growing up in Hopkins Holler. Pearl always put her family first, then the people in her neighborhood. She loved to cook, her specialty was butterscotch pie. Mrs. Countiss was preceded in death by husband, Millard L. Countiss; her parents, Nelson and Laura (Sowards) Hopkins; a daughter, Barbara Stidham;three sons, Foyster L. Countiss, James L. Countiss and an infant son; Five sisters- Nora Addington, Carrie Burton, Cora Hopkins, Ota Church and June Engle; and six brother, Henry Hopkins, Jim Hopkins, Earl Hopkins, Norman Hopkins, Tom Hopkins and Arch Hopkins. Survivors include her daughter Geraldine (Peanut) Mayorshi and late husband Frank-Roanoke, VA; son-in-law Claude Stidham; eight grandchildren, Marcus Countiss and wife Janice, Jerome Countiss, Valerie Countiss- all from Houston, TX; Sherry Stidham- Wise, VA; Shelly Logan and husband Durwin- Pound, VA; Chris Stidham and wife Jennifer- Mebane, NC; Scott Mayorshi and wife Pam and Susan Sine and husband Ken- all from Roanoke, VA; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; her caregivers, Elizabeth Mullins, Ann Poholsky, Trish Kiser, Iva Stidham, Shirley Burke, Kristy Jackson and Crea Stallard; a special grand-daughter, Shelly Logan; and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn her passing and cherish her memory. A celebration of Pearl’s life will take place at 7:00 pm Sunday, August 10, 2014 in the Sadie Baker Memorial Chapel with Reverend Jerry Lusk officiating. JANET MADELINE BOGGS EOLIA, KY- Janet Madeline Boggs, 57, entered into eternity Thursday August 7, 2014 from the Appalachia Regional Hospital in Hazard, KY. Janet was a Christian and a member of the Millstone Primitive Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Janet enjoyed cooking , spending time with her family, keeping up with family and friends on Facebook, reading her Bible and attending church. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Dallas and Mary( Rutherford) Adams; a grandson, Levi Brock; sisters, Mary Lynn Stephens, Lois Brock, and Loretta Hall; brothers, Dallas Adams, Jr., Charles Lester Adams, Bobby Joe Adams, Ronnie Adams and Dewey Adams. GOLDIE MULLINS POUND, VA – Goldie Mullins, 96, entered into her eternal home with the Lord , On Tuesday July 29, 2014 from the Mountain View Regional Hospital-Norton, VA. She was surrounded by her loving family. Goldie was born May 7, 1918 in Freeling, VA to the late Basil and Hannah (Reed) Potter. She was a born again Christian and was the oldest living member of Pyles Memorial Chapel until her passing. Goldie loved her entire family and enjoyed spending time with them. She also enjoyed cooking, quilting, sewing, working in the garden and canning. She was also active in her church, attending numerous conferences and revivals. And in her later years she discovered a love for beaches and the ocean. In addition to her parents, Goldie was preceded in death by husband Richard (Bee) Mullins; sons-in-law, Gary Sturgill and Buddy Walker; grandchildren, Christopher Sturgill, Gary Shayne Sturgill, Shawn Mullins and Teresa Dawn Yonts; great-grandchildren, Mark Craig Gentry Jr. and Christina Skinner; her sisters, Emma Lou Fleming, Dove Smith and Bernice Childers; and her brothers, Ervin, Roy, Ernest, Bob and Henry Potter. ALBERTA MAGGARD POUND, VA - Mrs. Alberta Maggard, 82, went home to be with the Lord on Monday July 28, 2014 from Indian Path Hospital Kingsport, TN. Alberta was a Christian of the Freewill Baptist faith. She attended Pyles Memorial Freewill Baptist Church . She loved studying the Bible with her family. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and had a gift for baking. Canning and gardening was something she also enjoyed, but playing with her grandbabies was what put a smile on her face. She was a cook at several restraints and apart owner of Dollie’s Bakery. Alberta was preceded in death by her husband, Mitchell Maggard; her parents, Arvil and Dollie (Mullins) Short; sisters, Kay Short and Loretta Fleming; brothers, Eslin Short, Burnis Short and Wade Short. GINGER LEIGH CANTRELL COLLIER POUND, VA- Ginger Leigh Cantrell Collier, 49, entered into Heaven Wednesday July 23, 2014 from Holston Valley Medical Center-Kingsport, TN after a long extended illness. She was surrounded by her loving family. Ginger was a Christian and a member of the Lone Pine Chapel Church in Pound, VA. She enjoyed fishing, camping , cooking for her family, listening to and singing county music and spending as much time as she could with her dear nieces and nephews. Her Mom and Dad provided her the best care possible, even during some difficult circumstances. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. RUSTY PEAKS POUND, VA – Rusty Peaks, 49, entered into eternity Monday July 14, 2104 from his residence, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family. Rusty was of the Christian faith, he loved his family, especially his best friend, his Dad. He loved life and enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews. He also enjoyed shooting pool, playing cards, bingo, playing the lottery, fighting chickens and listening to music, especially AC/DC. Rusty worked for several years as a nurse at Heritage Hall in Wise, VA He was preceded in death by his mother, Artie Mae Davis Peaks; his step-mother, Trennia Peaks and his grandparents, Orville and Nellie Peaks. DONNIE G. FALIN POUND, VA – Donnie G. Falin, 62, entered into eternity Tuesday July 8, 2014 from his residence, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family. Donnie was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was a Christian and a veteran of the United States Army, also a former waste water treatment facility site manager for 21 years for the town of Pound and Veolia. Donnie was also a former police officer for the town of Pound and a D J for WIFX . He loved to play music and spend time with his granddaughters. He also loved his dogs, enjoyed camping and was a big fan of the Atlanta Braves, the San Francisco 49ers and the Virginia Tech Hokies and was also an avid history buff. Donnie was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie W. (Squirt) Falin and Ruby Fleenor and a niece, Michelle Partin Survivors include his loving wife of 36 years, Clella (Rife) Falin; his son, Leslie Falin and wife Haley-Pound, VA; granddaughters, Abigail and Skylar Falin; sister, Diana Falin Deutsch-St. Barths Island and Ellicott, MD; step-sister Lynn Falin-Coeburn, VA; brothers, James M. JESSICA ELISE McARTHUR CLARK WISE, VA – Jessica Elise McArthur Clark, 28, entered into eternity Saturday, January 21, 2012. Jessica was a 2001 honor graduate of J. J. Kelly High School, Wise, Virginia, where she was a member of the track team and the varsity cheerleaders. She was of the Christian faith and was baptized at the Wise Church of God. She attended UVA-Wise and was currently enrolled in the Funeral Service Program at Mountain Empire Community College. She was Office Manager and Funeral Service Apprentice at her family’s business, Baker Funeral Home, Pound, VA. Jessica loved her family dearly, especially her brother, Alex. She loved animals all her life and had two special Yorkies, Maggie and Makiah. Jessica had a kind spirit, had friends of all ages, and tried to help everyone in any way she possibly could. Jessica was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Harold Ray McArthur, and her maternal grandparents, Jesse “Sambo” and Dorothy Jane Bright.
