JAMES BURLAIN GARDNER JR. NORTON, VA- James (Buddy) Garnder, 59, passed away Friday June 22, 2018 from Wise Heritage Hall. His family was at his bedside . Buddy was of the Pentecostal faith .He worked many years in the construction and home improvement business. Buddy was an outdoorsman , being an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed playing cards, watching NASCAR , he was a true Mark Martin fan and spending hours in the mountains looking for dry land fish and ginseng. Buddy will be greatly missed by his mother and family. Buddy was preceded in death by his wife, Joan (Lane) Gardner; his father, James B. Gardner Sr. Survivors include his mother, Charlotte Gardner- Norton, VA; daughters, Lora Culbertson(Bucky)- Norton, VA, Karen Daughtery (Mike)- Big Stone Gap , VA; a son, Steven Collier (Yung Hi)- Ludowici, GA; 9 grandchildren, Tessa, Laken, Colton. WILLARD DARRELL COLLINS NORTON, VA- Willard (Dee) Collins, passed away unexpectedly Friday June 22, 2018 from his residence. Dee was a former store manager for both Krogers and Publix grocery stores. He enjoyed playing poker, watching racing and working in a garden. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. EVERETTE ALSON ROBERTS, JR WISE, VA – Everette Roberts, 57, passed away Friday June 15, 2018 from the Holston Valley Medical Center-Kingsport, TN after a brief illness. His family was by his side. Everette was of the Christian faith. He was a retired coal miner with several years of underground experience. He was a NASCAR fan and also enjoyed baseball and football games. He was an excellent cook and enjoyed having meals with his family. His favorite pastime though was spending time playing with his grandkids. Everette and his daughter Kimberly were best friends, always confiding in and relying on each other. He was kindhearted and generous and he was also old school and never changed his ways. Everette was preceded in death by his parents, Everette Roberts, Sr. and Stacy (Stipes) Roberts. FRANKLIN MONROE PHILLIPS POUND, VA- Franklin Monroe Phillips, 63, passed away Monday June 18, 2018 from his home in Pound, VA after an extended illness. Franklin was baptised in the Christian faith and loved Jesus Christ. He was a plumber for 27 years and also a certified brick mason. He was an avid NASCAR fan with Bobby Labonte and Jamie McMurray being his favorites. Frank was a lifelong fan of the Pittsburg Steelers and later became a fan of the Pittsburg Penguins hockey team. He loved being outdoors and his hobbies were fishing, hunting camping and gardening. Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Herman and Peggy Lucille (Short) Phillips and a nephew, Cody Phillips. WILLIAM EARL BAKER POUND, VA        -William Earl Baker peacefully passed into the arms of his Savior on Sunday June 17, 2018, at his home following an extended illness. He was born June 29, 1934, in Tazewell, Tennessee and was the son of the late Roy and Lilly Mae Greear Baker. Earl was a 1953 graduate of Hancock County High School in Sneedville, TN and later attended Lincoln Memorial University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree. After graduation, he served two years of active duty in the United States Army as a radio repairman and two years in the Army Reserves. Upon completing his military duties, he became an educator for the Wise County School System teaching Biology and Chemistry, serving as Assistant Principal and Principal at Pound High School. During this time he attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville where he earned a Master’s Degree in Education. He retired in 1989 after thirty years of service. Earl will long be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit and his servant’s heart for others; he was known as a good and honorable man.He shared his joy for fishing and golf with many young people and friends. Earl was a member of Little Mulberry Baptist Church in Tazewell, TN, but attended Pound United Methodist Church while living in Pound. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dora Brooks, and a brother, Jim Baker. Surviving are his loving wife of sixty-one years, Ethel Baker- Pound, VA; one son, William Christopher Baker- Los Angeles, CA; two granddaughters, Holly and Rosa Mae Baker- Olney, MD. They were the love of his life, sisters, Angie Ramsey –Morristown, TN, Lucille Coody and husband Melvin- Jacksonville, FL and Ruth Archer andhusband Robert- Ringgold, GA.; brothers, Charles Baker and wife Irene- Tazewell, TN. and Larry Baker and wife Gayle- Cleveland, TN; several nieces, nephews and a host of others relatives and friends. Funeral services for William Earl Baker will be held at J.W. Adams Combined School at 7:00pm Wednesday June 20, 2018 with Pastor Randy Carter and Reverend Preston Mitchell officiating. BILLY RAY TAYLOR POUND, VA             –     Bill “Dooley” Taylor, 78, passed away Saturday June 16, 2018 from the Holston Valley Medical Center- Kingsport, TN. His family was at his bedside. Bill was a retired coal miner with 38 years total experiences with 27 and 1/2 working for Westmoreland Coal Company, where everyone knew him as “Dooley” Taylor. He was a proud member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was a very outgoing person, who never met a stranger. He had a very good sense of humor and loved to make others laugh and smile. Bill enjoyed going camping, fishing and watching NASCAR-he was a true Dale Earnhardt fan. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Inez (Berry) Taylor; and his sisters, Bonnie Hale and Helen Keith. BOBBY GENE ADDINGTON POUND, VA            - Bobby Gene Addington, 82, went home to be with the Lord and his family Friday June 15, 2018 from Heritage Hall-Wise, VA. His family was at his bedside. Bobby was of the Baptist faith and attended Davis Chapel Church in Norton, VA. He was a retired carpenter and was well known for his building skills. He built 154 houses and several apartment buildings during his career. He believed in a good days work and providing for his family. Bobby was a friend to everyone he met, he had a great sense of humor. He loved to fish and go to church when he able. Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Tollie and Ruby (Bowman) Addington; a brother, Kenneth Addington and a brother-in-law, Richard Ellis. RUFUS MILTON STRANGE, SR. POUND, VA       - Rufus Milton Strange, Sr, 93 went home to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday June 13, 2018 from his residence. He was surrounded by his loving family. Rufus was a Christian who loved his Lord. He was a member and a former Deacon at Ferbie Chapel Church-Pound, VA. He was a Corporal in the United States Army having served 2 years and 23 days in World War II. Rufus was also a retired coal miner with over 20 years experience, with 8 being underground. He enjoyed riding his Rhino, rabbit hunting, gardening and canning and watching racing and boxing. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all that knew him. Rufus was born March 22, 1925 to the late William and Margaret Elizabeth (Robinson) Strange. In addition to his parents, he was preceded and united in death with the love of his life, Virgie (Martin) Strange; a son, Rufus Strange Jr: sisters, Vivian Strange, Hazel Robinson and Beulah Harding; brothers, William Strange, James Strange and Cecil Strange; and his special friends, Reverend Lester Robinson and Richard (Blue) Skeen. ROY HUBERT MULLINS WISE, VA      –    Roy Hubert Mullins, 76, went home to be with the Lord and his family members Monday June 12, 2018 from his residence . He was surrounded by his loving family. Roy was a Christian and a member of the Fairview Old Regular Baptist Church. He was a retired maintenance man for the Wise County Schools, with 22 years of service. Roy always had a smile on his face and always had something to make you laugh or smile. He loved to reminisce about the past. Roy loved the Lord “ His Sweet Savior’ as he would say. He enjoyed checkers, coloring books, puzzles and watching Wheel of Fortune. He would chop wood for hours on end. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Ivory and Christine Mullins; a sister, Retta Brookman; and his brothers Glenn Mullins, Robert “Hoppy” Mullins and Gerald Mullins. BENNIE ALLEN MULLINS POUND, VA - Bennie Allen Mullins, 85, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully on Tuesday June 5, 2018 at the Mountain Home Veterans Administration Medical Center in Johnson City, TN. Bennie was born September 25, 1932 in Pound, VA to the late Arthur and Rhilda McPherson Mullins. He loved hunting , fishing, raising goats and beekeeping. But his greatest love was his family. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean War, a Smith Transfer Company retiree, as well as a retired coal miner. He was a long time member and deacon of Fairwood Freewill Baptist Church in Fairfax, VA, a current member and deacon of Hope Freewill Baptist Church and recently attended Ferbie Chapel Church in Pound, VA. In addition to his parents, Bennie was preceded in death by his sons Steve Allen Mullins and Johnny Dale Mullins; his brothers, Arthur Mullins, Jr. and Roger Mullins; and grandparents Patton and Alice Mullins who raised him. JAMES PRITCHARD POUND, VA –

James “Jack” (Bigfoot) Pritchard, 77, entered into the arms of his Lord and Savior Tuesday May 22, 2018 at his residence after an extended illness. He was surrounded by his loving wife and family. Jack was a Christian and a member of the Independent Baptist Church of Pound, VA. Jack was born May 22, 1941, the son of the late John Frank Hampton Jr. and Julia Ruth Pritchard, Sturgill, Sparks of Newland, NC. He worked as a heavy equipment operator, mechanic and foreman for 40 plus years at Ambrose Branch Coal. He enjoyed mowing his grass, picking blue berries, mechanicing, deer hunting and spending time with his grandsons, which were his pride and joy. In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his step- father. ROBERT HOWARD HUBBARD POUND, VA - Howard Hubbard, 88, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday May 16, 2018 from his residence. Howard was a Christian of the Old Regular Baptist faith. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean War. Howard was a retired coal miner with 25 plus years of experience. He enjoyed the outdoors , loving fishing and hunting , raising a garden and canning his harvest. He was a loving husband, father and grand- father. He really enjoyed the time he spent with his family. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Willard F. Hubbard and Lillie V. ROBERT FRANKLIN (FRANK) JACKSON- 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 And to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, so that you may walk properly before men and be dependent on no one. Frank Jackson, 79, entered into his heavenly home Saturday, May 12, 2018 from the Holston Valley Medical Center–Kingsport, TN after sustaining injuries due to a mowing accident. He was surrounded by his loving family. Frank was born in Pound on July 28, 1938. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He was a Christian and a 60 year member of the First Baptist Church of Pound, VA, where he also served as a deacon emeritus. He graduated from Clay High School in Portsmouth, OH in 1956. Frank was the owner and operator of J.C. Coal Company for many years. He was a skilled carpenter and was frequently found maintaining the grounds of the church. He enjoyed spending time with his family at his pool and was an avid UK Wildcat basketball fan. Frank was the son of the late Ferrell (Fletch) and Margaret (Bolling) Jackson. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Angela Fleming Jackson. He was also preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Kay Fleming Lippse and the Rev. Charles E. Lippse-Chattanooga, TN. Survivors include his two children, Finley M. Jackson-Pound, VA and Crystal J. SHIRLEY ANN MULLINS NORTON, VA- Shirley Ann Mullins, 79, entered into eternity Friday May 11, 2018 from Heritage Hall- Wise, VA. Her loving husband and daughters were at her bedside. Shirley was a Christian and attended Pyles Memorial Church. She was a native of Norton, VA and had been a resident of Heritage Hall-Wise for the past year. Shirley and Edward Joe celebrated their 50th anniversary on April 13th this year. When she was able she enjoyed cooking and making candy, gardening and canning, reading her Bible and attending church. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her family. Celebration of the Life of MARGARET JANE MEADE BOLLING Margaret Jane Meade Bolling of Pound, Virginia, went to be with her lord and savior on May 6th, 2018 after an extended illness. She was born June 12th , 1931 in Jenkins, KY. to Clyde and Nellie Dotson Meade. Margaret was a school teacher and she first taught in a one room school on Caney Ridge. While attending Summer School at William and Mary, and working at a drive in restaurant she met her beloved husband, Donnie Ray Bolling. After they moved to New Haven, Connecticut, Margaret taught Special Education. In, 1976, after Donnie retired from the Navy, they moved to the Flat Gap section of Pound, VA. At the age of 53 she graduated with a Bachelor of arts degree from UVA- Wise. Margaret taught for the Pride Program in Wise County. She was a member of the Gideons Association where she gave out bibles to high school and nursing school graduates and to the inmates in the Wise County jail. Margaret was a member of the Flat Gap Missionary Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School , Bible school, and helped with the youth program for over 45 years. She had a green thumb and loved gardening and canning her harvest. She enjoyed quilting and collecting antiques. While she could, she loved walking up Bear Fork and sitting on the porch with Aunt Thelma and Bert Sturgill. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren more than anything. She loved to cook large dinners for her family so she could have them all together. In addition to her parents Margaret was preceded in death by her brothers Buddy, Mickey, Raymond, Parkie, Harry and Carl Meade. ERNEST MARK CVETNICH JR POUND, VA -- Ernest Mark Cvetnich, Jr, 57, went to his Heavenly home in the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 11, 2018 from Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN. Mark was a minister of the Freewill Baptist faith and let his love for His Lord and Savior show everyday in the way he treated those around him. Following his identity as a Christian, he would tell you his favorite role was being “Dad.” He loved his wife and children and found his joy in spending time with them and supporting all their endeavors. He spent hours upon hours of his time serving his community through local athletic and religious programs. He loved all the kids whose lives he was able to be a part of through his community service and poured his heart into them whether it be through the basketball programs, Little League, his church, Lone Pine Chapel, or Bibletime Ministries in the schools. Mark was preceded in death by his mother, Jeanette Cvetnich. He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Pam; his children, Ashley (fiancé, Joseph Young), Bradley, and D’Anna; his father, Ernest Cvetnich, Sr; his sister, Teresa Cvetnich; his honorary sister, Suzzie Vanover (Henry); and a host of other friends and family to mourn his passing. DOUGLAS R. PILKENTON POUND, VA – Doug Pilkenton, 73, passed away peacefully Friday April 6, 2018 from the Holston Valley Medical Center. His family was at his bedside. Doug was a retired coal miner with over 30 years of experience and a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He loved the outdoors, coon hunting, and his fighting roosters. Doug was a mechanic and a jack of all trades and never met a stranger. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Maude (Boggs) Pilkenton; a sister, Georgia Phillips; and brothers, Glenn, Braxton, J.C., M.D., Gary and Bruce Pilkenton. BILLY ROYCE KISER POUND, VA- Billy Royce Kiser, 86, entered into eternity Tuesday April 3, 2018 from the Holston Valley Medical Center- Kingsport, TN. Billy was a Christian and of the Baptist faith. He was a retired surface miner with over 35 years of experience and a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean War. Billy was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed coon hunting, fishing and spending time at the lake. He loved family gatherings and spending time with his grandchildren and family. He also loved his special dog, Harley. Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert Royce and Victoria (Pilkenton) Kiser; a daughter, Darlene Kiser; a sister, Beulah Bateman; brothers, Raymond Kiser and Charles Kiser; and a daughter-in-law, Gail Sexton Kiser. DANNY G STURGILL POUND, VA – Dan Sturgill, 75, went home to be with the Lord on Friday March 30, 2018 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family. Dan was a veteran of the United States Army, having proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He was a Christian and a member of the Copper Creek Primitive Baptist Church. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America. Dan enjoyed deer hunting, camping and fishing, but his favorite activity was spending time with his grandkids. He prided himself in never meeting a stranger, and will be greatly missed all who knew him. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Baxter and Mary Sturgill; two sisters, Jackie Gillenwater and Norma Bowman; a niece, Shannon Sturgill; a nephew, Daniel Sturgill; sister-in-law Betty Sturgill; and cousins, Palmer Sturgill and Claude Sturgill. HASSIE SHORT JACKHORN, KY- Hassie Short, 91 years, 7 months and 3 days went home to be with her Lord and Savior Monday March 19, 2018 from the Whitesburg ARH-Whitesburg, KY. First thing above all else, Hassie loved the Lord. She loved her church and her church family and especially admired and loved her pastor , Danny Hurst. She had been a member of Hemphill Freewill Baptist Church for nearly 50 years. She loved life and church but she dearly loved her family and cherished the time she had with them. Hassie would help anyone the best she could always thinking of others. If you knew Hassie, you knew she had a love for her flowers, gardening and canning. She also enjoyed quilting, sewing, knitting, feeding her hummingbirds and she loved her “ UK CATS”. But the best part of life was her love for her family and the example she set for them. She loved those grandchildren and especially those great grandchildren. She was a blessing to us all. If Hassie could say one last thing it would be...”If you don’t know Jesus, then get in a home church and get to know him.” Hassie is preceded in death by her husband, Mick Short; her father, Town Hall; her mother Mary (Blair) Hall-Yonts; stepfather, Ernest Yonts; sister, Allie Wright and a half-sister, Wilma Sue. EDDY L. ELLISON POUND, VA- Eddy L. Ellison, 66, entered into rest Tuesday March 6, 2018 from the Lonesome Pine Hospital-Big Stone Gap, VA due to complications from injuries suffered in an accident August 22, 2017. His family was by his side. Eddy was a Christian of the Baptist faith and a proud member of the N.R.A. He enjoyed fishing, yard work, shooting his guns and even going to Walmart. But mostly, he cherished the time he got to spend with his grandson and family. Eddy was loved by his family, he will truly be missed by them. Eddy was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Essie (Branham) Ellison and a sister, Earlene Bolling.
