WILMA JEAN MARKHAM WISE, VA – Mrs. Wilma Jean (Stapleton) Markham, 83, entered into eternal rest Monday August 24, 2015 from the Mountain View Regional Medical Center-Norton, VA after an extended illness. Her loving family was by her side. Mrs. Markham was a Christian. She was a loving mother, wife, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She was a retired custodian and concession stand worker for the Wise County School System with over 15 years of service. Wilma enjoyed feeding and watching birds, playing bingo and working crossword puzzles. She was a huge Elvis fan and also loved listening to Nathan Stanley sing. Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, Milton and Ollie (Smith) Stapleton; her first husband, Billy Ray Gilliam and her second husband, Ralph Markham; her son Gerald Markham; and her brothers, Elmer , Sam , Martin and Tommy Stapleton; and a step grandson, Stacy Gilliam. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Fred Balthis-Wise, VA; four grandchildren; Scotty Balthis, Mark Balthis, Rodney Gilliam and Joseph Stanley; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Diana Shell and Virginia Hylton both of Wise, VA; seven brothers, Claude Stapleton- Boone, NC, Sonny Stapleton- Harrah, OK, Ronnie Stapleton- Beckley, WV, Wayne Stapleton- Rural Oak, MI, Wilson Stapleton and Johnny Stapleton- Wise, VA, and Marvin Stapleton- Kingsport, TN; several nieces, nephews and cousins; several special pets and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn her passing and cherish her memory. HENRY LEON BALTHIS POUND, VA – Henry Leon Balthis,57, entered into eternity Saturday August 22, 2015 from his residence after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family. Henry was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed country music, spending time at the beach and hanging out with family and friends. But what he loved doing the most was riding his Harley for hours at a time. He was a true” Harley Man”. Henry was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Allen Balthis and Julia (Belcher) Balthis; sisters, Patsy Yvonne Balthis and Sandra Lois Balthis; a brother, Gordon Michael Balthis; and brother-in-law, William McFarland. JOE B. SHORTT JOHNSON CITY, TN – Joe B. Shortt, formerly of New Mexico, entered into eternity Wednesday August 19, 2015 from his residence in Johnson City, TN after an extended illness. Joe was born in Pound, VA on February 10, 1953. He was a loving son, father and brother. Joe was a former truck driver. He loved to travel and look at the outdoor scenery. He was an avid NASCAR fan, his favorite driver was Jeff Gordon. He also enjoyed watching old westerns and classic television shows like Mayberry RFD and Gomer Pyle. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Berlin Shortt and Beatrice Fink. Survivors include his daughter, Kimmy Shortt-Johnson City, TN; his son Joey Shortt and wife Lisa, Johnson City, TN; his sisters, Sandra Denton and husband Larry-Rossville, GA and Irma Holt and husband Joe-Johnson City, TN; his brother, Marvin Fink and wife Janet-Unicoi, TN; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn his passing and cherish his memory. CLARENCE ERWIN ELLISON KINGSPORT, TN- Clarence Erwin Ellison, “Charlie”, 67, entered into eternity Thursday August 13, 2015 from Holston Valley Medical Center- Kingsport, TN Clarence was a retired ironworker with approximately 40 years experience. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was an sports fan, and especially enjoyed playing regular games of golf. Clarence was preceded in death by his mother and Jolene Hurd Ellison and his father and step-mother Marion Clarence and Edna Marie Ramsey Ellison. RYAN LEN MULLINS POUND, VA – Ryan Len Mullins, 5 months. Heaven got a new angel Monday August 17, 2015 when Ryan went home to be with the Lord and his brother Frank where they will spend eternity. Ryan was the infant son of Len and Viola (Church) Mullins, born March 11, 2015 along with his twin brother Franklin Ray. The two of them were inseparable when they were here, and now they will be together forever. Ryan was very observant, always paying attention to what was around him. He was a very playful, active and happy baby. Ryan loved stuffed animals, especially his puppy he sang to. He loved to watch Captain America on TV and going outside and fishing with his parents. His Mommy and Daddy loved and cherished him and look forward to joining Ryan and Frank in Heaven. PHYLLIS ELAINE BUSH POUND, VA – Phyllis Elaine Bush, 53, went to be with the Lord Sunday August 16, 2015 from Mountain View Regional Medical Center, Norton, VA Elaine was born April 20, 1962 in Montgomery, MD to Jesse gene Gibson and Olivia Becker. She was a Christian of the Baptist faith. Elaine was a high school graduate and a lifelong homemaker. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandkids. She also enjoyed talking on the phone and watching television, especially old westerns and the Andy Griffith Show. Elaine was preceded in death by her father, Jesse Gene Gibson; her daughter, Jessica Nicole Bush; Her sisters, Kathy Gibson and Shirley Gibson; and her brothers, David Gibson , Sonny Gibson and Willie Gibson. WALTER FRANKLIN MULLINS POUND, VA – Walter Franklin (Doo) Mullins,72, entered into eternity Thursday August 13, 2015 from his home. He was surrounded by his loving family. Walter was a Christian and a member of Pyles Memorial Chapel Church over 50 years. He loved to play jokes and cut up with his family and friends. He enjoyed chewing gum and sitting on his porch chewing tobacco. He loved going to church and if someone hadn’t been there in a while he would want to take their name off the church directory. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Gilmer and Lola (Boggs) Mullins; a sister, Pauline Moore; two infant sisters; brothers, Bobby Harold Mullins and Roger Ladon Mullins; and an infant brother. DONNA KAY MULLINS-BAKER POUND, VA – Mrs. Donna Kay Mullins-Baker, 68, entered into the arms of her Lord and Savior Wednesday August 12, 2015 from her home after an extended illness. She was surrounded by her loving family. Donna Kay was a devout Christian and a member of Pyles Memorial Church for over 45 years. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her grandbabies were her greatest passion, she also enjoyed quilting, sewing, picking berries, canning and preserving and watching crime shows on television. Donna Kay and her husband Randal were both Kentucky Colonels and were voted Mr. and Mrs. Wise County in 2008. She was preceded in death by her mother Nellie Mullins and a sister, Parzada Boggs; and her grandparents James C. AMY MELISSA RICHARDSON MILLSTONE, KY- Amy Richardson, 37, entered into eternity Monday August 10, 2015. Amy was a Christian and attended the Cornerstone Church in Whitesburg, KY. She was a loving mother, sister, daughter and friend.. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Also camping and four wheeling in the mountains. She loved her dog, Jack. Amy was a CNA and a former community college student. DANA JOLENE AUSTIN POUND, VA – Dana Jolene Austin, 79, went to be with her Lord and Savior from her home on Sunday August 9, 2015. Mrs. Austin was Christian and a member of the Pound First Baptist Church. She was a military wife, having lived and traveled all over the world. She was a graduate of Steed Business College and a Licensed Practical Nurse for approximately 30 years before retiring. Dana Jo was an avid reader, especially mysteries and fiction. She loved to travel and enjoyed moving to new places until her husband’s retirement from the United States Air Force. They enjoyed gardening and canning and camping trips. Dana Jo was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She cherished her time with her family and friends. Mrs. Austin was preceded in death by her parents, William (Pet) and Pearl Lee (Harris) Stapleton; her husband of nearly 47 years, Roy Lee Austin; her sisters, Eva Queseda, Wilma Ely, and Shirley Stapleton; a brother, William Lee Stapleton II; and her nieces, Crystal Ely and Naomi Shortt. STEVEN EDWARD BOYD POUND, VA- Steven Edward “Pilgrim” Boyd, 67, went to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday July 14, 2015 from the Norton Community Hospital with his loving wife and sister Vickie by his side. Steven was of the Methodist faith and a member of the Clearwater United Methodist Church in Doran, VA. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, a former coal miner and a long time coal truck driver. Steven especially enjoyed photography, drag racing, a variety of music, collecting guns and knives. He also was an avid reader with science fiction being one of his favorite topics. He was also a very loving and caring man, spending time with his family and grandchildren was very important to him. Pilgrim loved life to the end. Steven was preceded in death by his parents, Hershal and Margaret Ann (Nicewonder) Boyd. RICHARD D. ELLIS ARLINGTON, VA - Richard Dunkley Ellis, 80, passed away after a lengthy illness on July 8, 2015. He was born July 13, 1934 at Sibley Hospital in Washington, DC. As a young child his family moved to Fall Church, VA. After getting his GED at the Navy Yard he enlisted and was on active duty for four years and in the reserves for eleven years. He then went to work at Akers Oldsmobile Cadillac as a mechanic before owning with his father an American service station and a Sunoco service station in Arlington, VA. After selling the service stations he worked at a Toyota dealership as a mechanic before taking a position at Dowty Rotol as an aviation machinist. From there he went to work at Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, DC as a machinist/mechanic and worked his way up to being laundry manager for the hospital. He retired from Saint Elizabeth’s in 1999. As a young adult he enjoyed racing DU Stock Outboard Runabout Boats and won numerous trophies racing the boat he built. For the majority of his life he was an avid bowler. Till the end he was a kid at heart. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Edna Ellis. Richard is survived by his wife Janie C. Addington Ellis; sons Richard Lee (Laura) Ellis and Kevin Lee (Crystal) Ellis; grandson Sean Kenneth Ellis; granddog Coco; and a host of friends and loved ones. Visitation was held and followed by service on Tuesday July 14, 2015 at Murphy Funeral Home-Arlington, VA. CURTIS H. BROCK EOLIA. KY – Curtis H Brock, 48, entered into eternity Sunday July 5, 2014 from the Whitesburg ARH Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family. Curtis was of the Baptist faith, he was retired coal miner with 26+ years of experience. He was a former employee of Black Mountain Resources at the North Fork #4 Mine, and a former mining instructor for East Kentucky Coal Consultants. Curtis was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. He enjoyed spending time with his family, going to car shows, putting together model cars, restoring old cars , watching the Mountain Monsters ,The History Channel and the A&E Channel. Curtis was good with his hands, being a carpenter , mechanic and car body work. To sum Curtis up, he was a Jack of all trades, and a” Mopar Man” his motto was “Mopar or No Car”. Curtis was preceded in death by his mother, Lois Faye Adams Brock and a brother in law, Jimmy Anderson. JAYDEN MICHAEL AARON SUTHERLAND POUND, VA – Jay Sutherland, 11, left his home and joined the angels in the arms of Jesus Friday July 3, 2015 after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family as he peacefully entered into Heaven. Jay was an inspirational young man. He faced his adversities with courage and hope, never complaining about his situation. Although Jay’s illness made him appear frail, he possessed true strength. He kept a smile on his face and love in his heart. Jay’s life would seem too short to many, but those who were touched by him understood that it was the quality rather than the quantity of time that matters and to believe that each day is a blessing. With Jay’s passing, we are reminded that his life is to be celebrated. Although we will miss him every day, especially his smile, he will forever remain in our hearts. We are thankful that his sister Abigail (Ab) had her brother so she can hold dear the memory of Jay’s spirit and know that love lives on. Abigail’s quote to her brother was “Family by chance,best friends by choice.” Jay’s mother wanted it to be know that Matt is an example of what a father should be, putting Jay needs and care as his top priority. Jay enjoyed watching television, he loved Legos, Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Phineas and Ferb and especially Jessie on the Disney Channel. He loved playing jokes on his family and friends, his laugh would bring a smile to your face and joy to your heart. Jay had a special friend, his dog Lego that he loved dearly. Jay was preceded in death by his great-grandparents Wes Robinson, Garman and Pauline Edwards and Roosevelt and Hilda Sutherland. REVEREND LESTER ROBINSON POUND, VA – Reverend Lester Robinson, 86. On Thursday June 11, 2015 the Lord sent forth his angels to quietly and peacefully escort one of his saints home to spend eternity with Him in Heaven. Lester was born April 24, 1929 to the late Hobart and Flara (Meade) Robinson. He attended Dotson School where he met his childhood sweetheart, Thettie Meade, who later became his wife and the love of his life. They shared 53 years together, raising their children and sharing life’s experiences. Lester was a retired coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America and a former mechanic for Virginia Concrete in Woodbridge, VA. Lester was saved in June of 1949 and called by God to preach in the early 1960’s, and was ordained to preach in January of 1967. He was a true saint, serving his Lord and Master for many decades. He was the associate pastor and instrumental in the founding of Bethel Freewill Baptist Church in Woodbridge, VA; the former pastor of Ferbie Chapel and Lone Pine Chapel in Pound, VA; had regular appointments at Indian Creek Freewill Baptist and Pyles Memorial; served as interim pastor for several churches, and preached at numerous other churches He had a humble and gentle spirit, and a smile that could melt your heart. He was always caring and doing for others, putting their needs before his. He loved everyone and cared deeply about their souls and salvation. Lester loved and cherished his wife, children, grandchildren and entire family. He called his children “His Diamonds” He kissed them before going to work and woke them up for a “bite of sugar” when he got home. He was the Patriarch of the family and will be greatly missed. Lester was also an avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting rabbit, squirrel and turkey. He enjoyed gardening, canning and apple butter stir-offs. He loved history and had a thorough knowledge of the Bible. He also loved music and sang for over 20 years with The Grace Quartet Lester was preceded in death by his parents, Hobart and Flora (Meade) Robinson; his wife Thettie (Meade) Robinson, a son , Randy Robinson; a daughter, Emma Jo Mckisic; sisters, Faye Lester, Veatrice Cantrell, Odessa Counts, Inez Boggs and Anna Lee Meade; and brothers, Harold Robinson and Wesley Robinson. CLAUDETTE MEADE POUND, VA – Mrs. Claudette Meade, 83, went home quietly and calmly to be with The Lord and her family members that preceded her in death on Wednesday June 3, 2015, from the Mountain View Regional Medical Center-Norton, VA. Claudette Mullins Meade, was born February 20, 1932, the daughter of the late Gilbert and Maudie Mullins. She was married to Thurman Meade on December 11, 1948. To this marriage were born three daughters, Treva Gail, Rhonda Kay and Gina Louise. She was a devout Christian of the Freewill Baptist faith and a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. Claudette was a meticulous homemaker, she enjoyed quilting, cooking, singing and going to church, but her greatest joy was spending time with and caring for her family. She also loved being in charge, whether she was or not.
