ROGER (PENCIL) E. HUGHES HARRIMAN, TN- Roger (Pencil) E. Hughes, age 62 of Harriman, Tennessee, lost his battle with cancer on Saturday November 11, 2017. Roger was born in Clintwood, VA, August 5, 1955. Roger was raised in Pound, VA he found employment as a truck driver. Years later Roger relocated to the state of Tennessee finally settling in Harriman where he found employment working as a handyman to include landscape maintenance and construction remodeling. Roger was preceded in death by his life companion of 32 years Barbara Ellen Bowling in March 2017. Roger was also preceded in death by his parents, Arnold Burns Hughes and Olive (Stratton) Hughes and two brothers and three sisters. Roger was the youngest of ten children including a half brother. He is survived by four siblings, three brothers Bud Hughes-Merriam, Kansas, Marshall Hughes and wife Francis-Clintwood, VA Calvin Hughes- Brooksville, Florida, one sister Freda Coleman -Lorton VA Survivors include Son Daniel Eric Hughes and wife Rhonda-Front Royal, VA, Daughter Chasity Tenille Withrow and husband Patrick-Fredericksburg VA. And Daughter of lifelong companion Marnie Bowling Hughes-Roane, TN; 4 grandchildren Dalton Viers, Daniel Hughes, Logan Withrow and Marissa Withrow as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The Family would like to give a special thanks to Roger's exceptional friends of fifteen years Gary and Velma Jones of Harriman Tennessee for opening their hearts, home and showing unconditional compassion to Roger thru out his time of need and during final moments of his life. GUY EARNEST CHESTER WISE, VA- Guy Earnest Chester, 85, entered peacefully into eternity Thursday November 10, 2017 from Heritage Hall-Wise. Guys’s family was by his bedside. Guy was Christian and a member of the Stevens Church of God for 47+ years. He was a retired coal miner with over 40 years of experience and a member of the United Mine Workers of America. Guy was always busy helping others, he volunteered regularly at his church before he physically unable to do so. Guy loved attending church, and visiting with family and friends. He was well known for his Life Saver Peppermint candy. Guy was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 55 years, Naomi Ruth Chester; his son, Sammy Chester, his daughters, Kathy Chester and Connie Krebs, a granddaughter, Melissa Krebs; his parents, Joel Lankston and Ruby Ellen (Meade) Chester; a sister, Marie Mullins; brothers, Emerson Chester, Avis Chester and Houston Chester. Survivors include his son, John Chester and wife Shelia-Burlan, KY; daughter-in –law, Nora Chester-Pound, VA; grandchildren, Jeremy Chester, Savannah Chester, William (Bill) Gilliam, Haley Falin and John-John Ryder; 9 great-grandchildren; a sister, Christine Pratt and husband Raymond- Jefferson City, TN; a brother Cleatus Chester and wife Vernia- Clintwood, VA; his church family; several nieces, nephews and cousins and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn his passing and cherish his memory. LARRY DANE WRIGHT POUND, VA – Larry Dane Wright, 77, entered peacefully into eternity Monday October 30, 2017 from his residence in Pound, VA. His loving family was at his bedside. Larry was a Christian of the Presbyterian faith. He was a retired educator, having taught the 6th grade and serving as guidance counselor for approximately 35 years. He also served as a bus driver for 30 years. To say that Larry touched the lives of thousands of children would be an honest statement. Larry was also a community and civic leader, having served on the Pound Town Council for 23 years, including serving in the capacity of vice-mayor. Larry was a family man as well. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He treasured the time he spent with his kids and grandkids. Larry was preceded in death by two precious children, Jennifer Wright and Justin Wyrick Wright; his parents Clarence and Alta (Mullins) Wright; and two brothers, Clarence Wright, Jr. and Clyde Wright. Survivors include his loving wife of 35 ½ years, Glenda (Reynolds) Wright; daughters, Radess Meade and husband Ricky-Pound, VA, Ginger Shortt-Pound, VA and Kelly Jackson-Pound, VA; a son, Tony Wright and wife Lena-Wise, VA; grandchildren, Andy Wright, Savannah Chester, Haley Falin (Les), Mackenzy Mullins (Isreal), Dylan Meade, Sidney Jackson, and Kristen Meade; great-grandchildren, Abigail Falin, Liliana Crawford, Adisynne Jackson, Zoie Meade, Skylar Falin, Nikolai Chester, Penelope Mullins, Eryn Falin and Shane Wright; a sister, Margaret Weaver-Ripley, WV; brothers, Emory Wright-Lebanon, VA and John Wright and wife Kay-Wise, VA; special nephew Steve Connely; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn his passing and cherish his memory. MABEL LEE VANOVER MARYVILLE, TN - Mrs. Mabel Lee Vanover, 96, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday October 28, 2017 from the Concordia Transitional Care Center in Maryville, TN. Her family was at her bedside as she peacefully passed in her sleep. Mabel was a Christian of the Baptist faith. She had just celebrated her 96th birthday the day before, Friday October 27, 2017. She was a loving mother, grand- mother and great-grandmother. Mabel had a strong independent spirit, she always enjoyed taking care of herself and other as well. She was a fantastic cook and loved preparing meals for her family. She read her Bible nightly and enjoyed Gospel music. Mrs. Vanover was preceded in death by her husband, James Vanover; her parents, Samuel and Lou Raine (Sturgill) Maggard; her daughter, Mary Lou Lyon; her sons, Curtis Ray Stapleton, Jackie Lee Stapleton and Kent Patrick Stapleton; and brothers John Maggard and Buster Maggard. GEORGE WINDELL PHILLIPS POUND, VA – George Windell (Keokee) Phillips, 63, passed away Tuesday October 24, 2017 from Mountain View Regional Medical Center- Norton, VA. His loving family was at his bedside. Windell was a Christian of the Baptist faith. He was an avid drag racer and drag racing fan. Winning many drag races and street races himself. His last race was August 26, 2017 in Pikeville, KY where he finished in second place. Windell was a coal miner for 30 plus years , working mostly for Double M Coal. He was an electrician and a fabricator. Honestly, Windell was a jack of all trades. Windell is proceeded in death by his first wife, Darlene Phillips; his second wife, Bonnie (Mauck) Phillips; his daughter, Christina Dawn Phillip; his father , George Elmer Phillips and brother-in-law Ricky Adams. AMANDA REENE’ VANOVER CALHOUN BIG STONE GAP, VA – Amanda (Amy) Reene’ Vanover Calhoun, 43, entered into eternity Sunday October 22, 2017 from the Holston Valley Medical Center due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was surrounded by her loving family as she passed into the arms of her Lord. Amy was a Christian of the Baptist faith. She was a loving, mother, grand- mother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt and friend. Amy enjoyed traveling with Henry, listening to all types of music and sitting by campfires. But her greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren. In honor of her aunt Darlene Smith, Amy’s final act of kindness and love was to give the gift of life through bone and tissue donation. Amy is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Carl and Lillian Vanover and her maternal grandparents, Brown and Ruby Wise; uncles, Jerry Vanover, Larry Vanover, Dale Stallard, Earl Rose and Dennis Hall. VERA MAE SOWARDS POUND, VA – Mrs. Vera Mae Sowards, 86, went home to be with the Lord and her family members who passed before her on Monday October 16, 2017 from her residence in Pound, VA. She was surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Sowards was a Christian of the Old Regular Baptist faith. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. Vera was a former cook at several restaurants in the Pound area, she enjoyed quilting, working in the garden and her flowers, puzzle books, and watching TV, especially Golden Girls and gameshows. Her greatest joy though were the family get togethers. Mrs. Sowards was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Sowards; her parents, Troy and Martha (Sturgill) Engle; a grandson, Cody Johnson; her son-in-law Roger Craft; her sisters Jean Hunsucker, Nina Hobbs and Olga Hampton; and her brothers, Bill Engle, Junior Engle and Chalmer Engle. BRITTANY NICOLE WILLIAMS POUND, VA – Brittany Nicole Williams, 23, passed away Tuesday October 10, 2017 from the Mountain View Regional Medical Center- Norton ,VA. Brittany was of the Pentecostal faith. She was a former student of John I Burton High School in Norton, VA. Brittany had worked at Sykes and other places before becoming a full time homemaker and mother to her son. She was a loving and devoted mother to her beloved son Abel “Willie” Williams. She was also a loving wife, daughter, sister and friend. Brittany enjoyed reading , writing, and listening to all types of music. But her greatest pleasure was caring for her son Abel, who was born March 3, 2015. JERRY WAYNE HOBBS POUND, VA- Jerry Wayne “Pockets” Hobbs, 68, passed away peacefully from his home on October 10, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer. His loving wife was by his side. Jerry was a Christian of the Methodist faith. Jerry was a veteran of the United States Navy and was a former surface miner, working for Ison Coal, Paramont Coal and the former owner and operator of Hobbs Trucking. He enjoyed yardwork, gardening, watching movies, mostly action /western, watching NASCAR racing and was an avid fan of Bill Elliott and then Chase Elliott. He was a true” Ford Man” Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Lee “Rawhide” Hobbs and Carolyn (Tipton) Hobbs and a brother, Jeffery ”Hooter” Hobbs. JAMES ROY BAKER POUND, VA- James Roy “Crid” Baker, 78, passed away Tuesday October 3, 2017 from Holston Valley Medical Center after an extended illness. James was a retired coal miner with approximately 20 years of service. He was a mountain man and loved to go squirrel hunting and hiking the hills for ginseng. James also enjoyed a good chew of tobacco when he could. James is preceded in death by his parents, Linkous and Dorothy (Puckett) Baker; sisters, Elma Lowe and Brenda Harris; brothers, Norman Baker, Bruce Baker and Otis Baker. ILENE BOGGS POUND, VA – Ilene Boggs, 87, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Wednesday –September 27, 2017 from her daughter’s home in Pound, VA. Her loving family was at her bedside. Ilene was a Christian and loved the Lord, she was a member of Hamilton Chapel Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, great- great grandmother, sister (she was like a second mother to her siblings) and friend. She enjoyed quilting, growing her flowers, and traveling with her family. Ilene was a hard worker and instilled in her family an attitude of helping others. Ilene was preceded in death by her husband, Vernoy Boggs; a son, Preston Alan Boggs; her parents, Arvil and Blanche Effie (Meade) Hurt; sisters, Savannah Austin and husband Carl, Ann Austin and husband Jim and Virgie Schuitema and husband John; a brother, Don Hurt and special nephew, Brad Hurt. SAMUEL BRANHAM CHESAPEAKE, VA- Samuel Branham, 83, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday September 26, 2017 from the Dickenson Community Hospital. His loving daughter and son-in-law was at his side. Samuel was a former resident of Pound, VA before moving to eastern Virginia. He was of the Pentecostal faith and attended the Cornerstone Church of God in Norfolk, VA. He was a retired supply clerk for the Naval Air Station. Samuel enjoyed and was well accomplished at playing the guitar, banjo, bass and mandolin and even performed in an opening act for Johnny Cash at the Hampton Colliseum. He also liked to go squirrel hunting, fishing, working in his garden and canning what he grew. But his greatest pleasure was the time he had with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Samuel was preceded in death by his loving wife, Claudette (Tompkins) Branham: his parents, Delmar and Marie (Warrick) Branham; a brother, Johnny Branham; brothers-in-law, Richard DeHeck and Carl Hall; and sister-in-law, Jackie Branham Survivors include his daughters Denise Campbell and husband Gary- Spotsylvania, VA and Becky Downer and husband Danny- Chesapeake, VA; grandchildren Anthony Campbell, Wanda Campbell and partner, Nick Creed and Lindsey Downer; great-grandchildren, Nicole Wilkenson (Dillon), Breelyn Taylor, Davey Taylor, Caitlyn Creed and Alexandra Creed; one great-great-grandson on the way (due in October); sisters, Shirley DeHeck-Clemmons, NC, Nelva Hall-Pound, VA and Linda Schultz and husband Marvin-San Jose, CA; a brother Reginald Branham and wife Winnie-Culleoka, TN; several nieces , nephews and cousins; and many dear friends to mourn his passing and cherish his memory. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 pm Friday September 29, 2017 in the Baker Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Burns Robinson officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until time of services. A private interment will be held at a later date. ALICE MAE HALL KINGSPORT, TN – Alice Mae Hall, 87, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday September 18, 2017 from the Wexford House. She was surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Hall was a Christian of the Freewill Baptist faith and attended Orbank Freewill Baptist Church. She was born June 18 , 1930 in Jenkins, KY. Alice was a home maker and sold Avon for many years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend her greatest joy was spending time with her family. Alice also enjoyed going to church, traveling and going shopping. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Hobart and Dora (Griffith) Castle; her son, Claude Martin Hall; and a sister, Dorothy Price. Survivors include her loving husband of 63 years, Willie J. Hall-Kingsport, TN; her daughter, Darlene Seibel-Acworth, GA; grandchildren, Joshua Martin Hall and Carmela Seibel; niece Anna Mae Crist and husband John; special friend Brenda Miller; and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn her passing and cherish her memory. PAUL K ADDAIR WAR, WV – Paul K Addair, 62, passed away peacefully at his home Thursday September 14, 2017. Mr. Addair was born in Welch, WV on July 16, 1955. He was a life-long resident of McDowell County, West Virginia. He was the son of the late Cleveland R. Addair and the late Ona Mae Sweeney Addair of Atwell, WV. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Addair. Paul was a Christian of the Pentecostal faith.. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was a retired security guard with 30 + years of experience. He enjoyed hunting and sports, especially the WVU Mountaineers. He also enjoyed reality TV shows. Mr. addair is survived by his wife of 41 years, Linda K. Addair of War. WV; one son Michael P. Addair and wife Carla of Hurricane, WV; two grandsons , Vincent and Elijah Addair; three brothers, Buddy Addair of Welch, WV, Roger Addair of Atwell, WV and Donald Addair and wife Connie of Atwell, WV; two sisters Ocie Ledford of Lakeland, FL and Alice Blankenship of Bramwell, WV; and a host of family and friends to mourn his passing and cherish his memory. The family would also like to recognize Mr. Addair’s brother-in-law, Jeffery Underwood who selflessly spent countless hours assisting Mr. Addair’s wife in caring for him through a long illness.. KENT PATRICK STAPLETON POUND, VA- Kent Stapleton, 59, passed away Tuesday September 5, 2017 from his home. Kent was of the Christian faith. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, going fishing and just liked having “a good ole time”. Kent was preceded in death by his father, Delmer Stapleton and a sister, Mary Lou Lyon and two brothers, Kurtis Ray Stapleton and Jackie Lee Stapleton. Kent is survived by his sons, Kent Patrick Stapleton Jr. Kingsport, TN and Jonathan James Stapleton- Alaska; a granddaughter, Savanah Stapleton; a sister, Lisa Stanley and husband Jackie- Sevierville, TN; brothers, James Stapleton and wife Peggy- Gainesboro, TN, Wayne Stapleton and wife Linda- Maryville, TN and Delmer Stapleton, Jr. and wife Carolyn- Temple, TX; several nieces, nephews and cousin and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn his passing and cherish his memory.
