KAREN LYNN FULKS POUND, VA - Karen Lynn Fulks, 51, passed away Friday August 18, 2017 from the Holston Valley Medical Center-Kingsport, TN after an extended illness. She was surrounded by her loving family. Karen was of the Baptist faith. She was a former retail cashier and a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandson, Zach. Karen loved to cook, she loved animals, especially cats, and enjoyed listening to music and watching The Big Bang Theory and Breaking Bad. Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Avis and Edell (Peaks) Mullins; her daughter, Kadesha Baker; and a brother, Michael Mullins. Survivors include her daughters, Shamberlie Morrison and husband Thorn- Big Stone Gap, VA and Keyleigh Mullins-Pound, VA; her grandson, Zachary Baker; her sister, Ava Mullins and husband Richard-Pound, VA; nieces, Misty Rollins and husband Jackson and Sommer Mullins; nephews Christopher Mullins and Aaron Lester; great-nephews, Brandon Rollins and Jordan Rollins; son-in-law, Robert Baker; several relatives; and a host of friends and loved ones to mourn her passing and cherish her memory. MANFORD D. MOORE DUFFIELD, VA – Manford D. Moore, 80, passed away peacefully Tuesday August 15, 2017at his residence. His loving family was at his side. Manford was a Christian of the Baptist faith. He was a retired coal miner for 18 plus years. Manford was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He was known as a jack of all trades He enjoyed fishing, hunting, whittling, woodworking and going to flea markets. He was also known to have frequently visited some of Pound’s establishments in his earlier years. But Manford’s greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren that he loved so dearly. Manford was preceded in death by his wife of 29 years Gay Moore; parents Oliver and Opal (Mullins) Moore; grandsons, Ronnie Moore Jr and Scott Dewey Barnette ; brothers, James Moore and Merle Moore and a step son, Keith Smith. NANCY L. MULLINS MARION, VA – Nancy L. Mullins, 85, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday August 13, 2017 from the Johnston Memorial Hospital- Abingdon, VA after an extended illness. Her loving family was at her bedside. Nancy was a Christian of the Baptist faith and attended Pyles Memorial Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She enjoyed reading, working puzzlebooks, taking trips, watching Days Of Our Lives and was an excellent seamstress. Nancy also loved to shop, always looking for a bargain. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents , Reverend William M. Crawford and Martha Jane (Hicks) Crawford ; her husband, Verlin Mullins; a daughter, Pat Collins and three sons, Ralph Mullins, James “Brutus” Mullins and Larry Mullins. VERA LEA MULLINS POUND, VA- Vera Lea Mullins, 80, went to be with her Lord on Saturday August 12, 2017 after enduring a long and courageous battle with cancer. Our mother fought with dignity and grace. Vera was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Hubbard Chapel Church- Pound, VA. where she attended for 20 plus years. She was dedicated to her family and showed them over and over what it meant to be strong and to fight and never give up. She was such an inspiration to us in so many ways. She never followed anyone’s rules but her own during her sickness. She didn’t give into cancer until it over took her in a way that she could not battle any longer. Mommy you will be missed and remembered always. We had so many fun times individually and as a family. You gave us a lifetime of love that will last until our ends. Vera was preceded in death by her biological father Joseph Harold Baker and real father Ray C. Short as well as her mother Dessie Beatrice Short; her brother, Randall Short preceded her in death as well. Her husband, Rufus Lafayette Mullins (RL) of 61 years preceded her in death in 2012. REVEREND LARRY BRANHAM POUND, VA – Reverend Larry Branham, 77, peacefully left this world Sunday August 6, 2017 to be in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His loving family was by his side. Larry was a devout Christian and a true man of God. He was the dedicated pastor of the Hope Freewill Baptist Church in Pound, VA for over 30 years. He was faithful to visit his church members as well as many others in his community. Larry worked hard to provide for his family, he enjoyed outdoor work right up until just a few weeks ago. He was a former mechanic and carpenter. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing and witnessing to everyone he met about serving the Lord. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Maize (Sowards) Branham; and his sisters, Lila Jean Branham, Deborah Roush, Sue Cox, Leatrice Groves and Marcella Basham. LISA TOMPKINS AKERS POUND, VA- Lisa Ann Tompkins Akers, 57, went home to be with her Lord, Saturday July 29, 2017 from the Wellmont Hospice House- Bristol, TN after an extended illness. Her loving family was at her bedside. Lisa was of the Baptist faith. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She enjoyed shopping, eating out and fishing with her husband. Lisa also collected owls and loved to wear her jewelry. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was married to the love of her life, Guy, for 40 years and they were high school sweethearts for 5 years prior to that. Lisa was preceded in death by her parents, Donnie Lee and Rosalie (Mullins) Tompkins. TERRY (DUD) MULLINS POUND, VA – Terry (Dud) Mullins, 69, entered into his eternal reward Thursday July 20, 2017 from the Johnson City Medical Center. Terry was a Christian and attended Hamilton Chapel Church and Indian Creek Freewill Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He cherished the time he spent with his family and friends. Terry was a miner for 40 plus years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, making deer jerky and giving it all away, gardening, playing solitaire and singing. He was always joking around and making people laugh. Terry never met a stranger. JACKIE LYNN LAWSON DUFFIELD, VA – Jackie Lynn Lawson, 62, passed away Thursday July 13, 2017 from his residence in the Jasper section. His loving wife Vanda was with him. Jackie was a Christian and a member of the Mooresburg United Methodist Church- Mooresburg, TN. He was also a member of the Pound Masonic Lodge # 59 AF &AM He lived a large part of his life in Norton and graduated from John I. Burton High School in 1973 where he was a member of the 1972 state champion football team. Jackie was the former owner of Lawson Trucking and a retired correctional SGT. for the Red onion state prison of Virginia. He was a loving husband, father, grand- father, son, brother and friend. Jackie is preceded in death by his mother, Sarah Sue (Pat) Lawson; his step-mother, Mary (Frankie) Lawson; his maternal grandparents, Clarence and Retta McArthur; and paternal grandparents Herbert (Hub) and Thelma (Lawson) Osborne. BENJAMIN EDWARD MULLINS LOS ANGELES, CA- Benjamin Edward Mullins, 52, formally of Pound, VA passed away July 6, 2017 at Loma Linda Hospital in California after a courageous battle with cancer. Ben was a former LPD quarterback for Pound High School and also played basketball, baseball and ran track. After high school, he joined the United States Army from 1984-1987. There he met and married Monica Covarrubias in this union they had two children Justin and Kelsey Mullins. Ben moved back to Virginia in 2016 to be with his family after being diagnosis with cancer. He was known and loved by everyone and left a lasting impression on all he knew. He never judged and always saw the good in people. He had many interests, but music was his favorite. He loved spending time with family and friends. He lived life to the fullest and had a sense of humor that would always put a smile on your face. People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did but people will never forget how you made them feel. Ben is preceded in death by his parents, Darrell and Flossie Mullins; a sister, Della Bush; brothers, Terry Mullins and Danny Mullins. DOROTHY FAYE McDAVID KINDLE KINGSPORT, TN – Dorothy Faye McDavid Kindle, 90, passed away Monday July 10, 2017 at the Holston Manor Nursing Home after a brief illness. Dorothy was a Christian of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, Warner and Virgie (Helbert) McDavid; daughters, Ann Thacker and two infant daughters; a son, Clay Anderson; and brothers Robert McDavid and Clinnie McDavid. HASSEL PHILLIPS, SR. POUND, VA – Hassel (Red) Phillips, Sr., 77, entered into eternity Friday July 7, 2017 from the Mountain View Regional Medical Center-Norton, VA.. His family members were at his bedside. Hassel was of the Baptist faith and attended Pyles Memorial Church-Pound, VA and Davis Chapel Church-Norton, VA. He had over 25 years experience as a coal miner, as well as 15 + years experience as a plumber. Hassel worked hard to provide for his family and was a jack of all trades. He loved tinkering with things and enjoyed working on motorcycles and cars and doing leather work. He loved riding motorcycles, and enjoyed drag racing. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and farming. Hassel was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Mallie Phillips; his son, Dewayne Phillips; sisters, Delphia Vanover, Lola Hopkins, Thelma Mullins, Lydia Boardwine, Ola Maggard, Elvia Vanover and Gay Moore; and brothers, Vernoy Phillips, Emerson Phillips, Edwin Phillips and Elmer Phillips. JETTY ANN HAMILTON POUND, VA – Jetty Ann Hamilton, 76, entered into her eternal reward Saturday July 8, 2017 from her residence after an extended illness. Jetty was Christian and attended Hamilton Chapel Church. She was a retired nurse and beautician and former member of the Board of Directors for RADA for 10 years. Jetty enjoyed visiting people and loved doing genealogy research. She enjoyed a variety of arts and crafts, including woodworking and macramé. She also enjoyed her flower garden , bird watching and reading. Jetty was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Mae (Collins) Kiser. ROY ELMER STEFFEY, SR. WISE, VA- Roy Elmer Steffey, Sr., 81, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday July 4, 2017 from his son David’s home in Wise VA. He was surrounded by his loving family. Roy had lived the majority of his life in Castlewood, VA. Roy was Christian of the Pentecostal faith and attended the House of the Lord Church. He was never in a war, but he fault many battles. Roy was a proud and strong man that never backed down from anyone or anything. He along with his wife of 45 years, Freda raised 12 children. He was a dad that touched many lives. He loved camping, fishing and picnicking at Copper Creek. Roy worked hard all his life from a young teen till his late 70’s . Roy worked in the tire business for nearly 40 years and other jobs at one time to provide for his needs of his family, but they never did without food or love. He raised a big garden each year, giving most of it away to family and friends. “Tough as a Pine knot” his physical strength, endurance and hard work was what he was known for. He instilled a lot of his strength in his children, raising them in the church and taught them to be strong in the Lord and trust in God and have strong character. Roy was preceded in death by his parents George and Anne (Meade)Steffey; his wife Freda Blanch (Hurd) Steffey; a daughter Rebecca Gail Adams; sisters Goldie White, Beulah Hurd, Helen Hurd and Gladys Hurd; and brothers Bill Steffey, Jack Steffey, Clarence Steffey and Pete Steffey. Buck was a retired surface coal miner with 35plus years of experience. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening when he was able. He liked to travel and enjoyed driving. EDMOND TRENT MULLINS POUND, VA - Edmond Trent Mullins, 85, entered peacefully into his eternal reward Tuesday June 20, 2017 from the Holston Valley Medical Center. He was surrounded by his loving family. Trent was a Christian, strong in his faith and loved the Lord. He was a long time member and deacon and former Sunday School superintendent at Pyles Memorial Freewill Baptist Church in Pound, VA. Trent was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of United Mine Workers of America having retired with over 40 years of experience in the mines.. He was well known there as “Roho”. Trent enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and was known as being the “ Nintendo Champ”. He treasured his time with his family and going to church. His wife Wilma was the love of his life. PATRICIA LYNN KILGORE WISE, VA – Patricia Lynn (Patty Cake) Kilgore, 40, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday June 5, 2017 from the Johnson City Medical Center. Her loving parents and sister were by her side. God let Patty fly away to be with her Lord and her brother Jeff. She was a special child of God and a blessing to her entire family. Patty had an enormous heart and loved everyone. She had the innocence of a child and loved playing jokes on her family and friends. She loved watching Golden Girls and playing cards. Patty was known by her family and friends as Patty Cake and NaNa. She was her Daddy’s Baby Girl, she waited every day for him to get home from work. The two of them went out regularly on “dates”, riding together for hours listening to bluegrass and gospel music. Patty Cake was the light of her Mommy’s life, caring for her was a privilege and a gift from God for the last forty and a half years. JAMIE DOTSON POUND, VA – Jamie Dotson, 48, entered into eternity Saturday June 3, 2017 from the Carilion Memorial Hospital-Roanoke, VA. His loving family was at his bedside. Jamie was a Christian of the Baptist faith. He was a loving father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend. He was a natural athlete, and was very good at any sport he participated in, especially football and baseball, which he played for Pound High School and Limestone College in Spartanburg, S.C. Later he enjoyed coaching his sons and others kids in the area. He coached little league and junior league baseball and peanut football. He loved everybody’s kids like he did his own. He was extremely proud of his sons. Jamie enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and spending time at the lake with his family and friends. Jamie was a former heavy equipment operator and was also a former owner of Saba Market in Pound. Jamie had a very outgoing personality and was quick to make friends. He had a big smile and a kind heart. Jamie was preceded in death by his father, Alvin Dotson: his paternal grandparents, Bascom and Gertrude (Gibson) Dotson; and his maternal grand parents, Everett and Leota (Stallard) Cantrell. BENNY LEE BOGGS POUND, VA – Benny Lee Boggs, 77, passed into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, on May 25, 2017 after a short term illness, although he had not been in the best of health for many months. Benny was preceded on death by his father, Arvil Boggs, and his mother Ellie Cantrell Boggs. He is survived by his wife of more than 56 years, Greta Banks Boggs; and his son Andrew Benjamin Boggs of Pound, VA. Benny attended Clinch Valley College and later graduated from Tennessee Technological University with a BS and a MS degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority in various capacities related to his formal education. He later worked for the United States Department of Energy in Washington, DC and in Los Alamos, NM. He concluded his career with a position at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, SC. After his retirement, Benny and his family returned to Pound to live in the house where he grew up, and where he resided until his passing. One of Benny’s proudest achievements was his military service. He served three and a half years in the United States Air Force at the Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, ME. Benny was a strong supporter of the United States military, and a true patriot. He was also a member of the Pound Masonic Lodge #57 AF &AM. Benny was fun loving and inquisitive his entire life. He was always interested in how and why things worked. He loved to laugh and enjoyed practical joke. He had an insatiable desire to learn about almost anything, and became particularly interested in political and geo political issues. He loved a good discussion and was well versed in a wide range of issues. Benny loved his family and was so proud if his wife, Greta and his son, Andy. That was abundantly clear to anyone who was around him for even a few minutes. He was Christian and loved his Lord. He would gladly engage in an evangelical discussion at any moment. He was member of the First Baptist Church of Pound. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of Holston Valley Hospital and members of the Pound Rescue Squad. Masonic funeral rites will be conducted at 7:00 pm Sunday May 28, 2017 in the Baker Funeral Home Chapel by the Pound Masonic Lodge #59 with funeral services to follow. DOLLY MAE BOLLING POUND, VA- Dolly Mae Bolling, 90 died peacefully on Thursday May 4, 2017 from Heritage Hall- Wise, VA. Mae was of the Baptist faith and most of her younger life attended Independent Bible Church (South Fork) Pound, VA and later attended Stevens Regular Baptist Church- Wise, VA Mae was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother, sister and friend. Mae was a constant worker, either self-employed or working for others. She was a talented quilt maker and enjoyed cross-stitching. She loved to cook and feed her family, go camping and fishing, going on Sunday after- noon drives. Mae was known as “Big Flea” by her family because of her passion for going to flea markets and yard sales.
